Coach Valdez continued the fi ne tradition of excellence by reaching the playoffs yet again in 2008. The Bobcats were defeated in bi-district action by a fi ne Brownsville Lopez team in two games. The future continues to look bright for the Bobcats with several returning players.
“In 2010 the Bobcats look to continue the ‘TRADITION’ of Edinburg High School,” said Head Coach Robert Valdez.
Derick Sosa (sr.), INF, 2nd team all-district 2B returns after hitting .333 with 7 doubles, 26 runs, 6 SB, and 13 RBI in 2009. Lee Rios (sr.), P/UTL, hit .380 with 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 13 runs, 3 SB, and 13 RBI last year. Rios was also 2-0 on the mound in 18.2 innings with an ERA of 3.37 and 17 strikeouts. Christian Alvarado (sr.), OF/P, was named to the honorable mention all-district team. Alvarado hit .356 with 1 2B, 4 3B, 15 Runs, 4 SB, and 19 RBI. Alvarado was 1-0 in 14.2 inning with an ERA of 1.91 and 8 strikeouts. J.J. Balderas (sr.), INF/ P, was also an honorable mention all-district selection last season. Balderas hit .226 with 4 2B, 3 3B, 2 runs, 1 SB, and 3 RBI in 2009. Senior Carlos Pena (sr.), 1B/OF, hit .250 with limited playing time.
The Bobcats currently have four players playing college ball. Michael Kasprzynski (09) Ranger Jr. College, Austin Casas (09) UTPA, and David Fasci (09) UTPA, Andre Cordova(09) Texas A&M International in Laredo.
“Pitching is the main area, and we must develop a steady everyday catcher. Also, with high number of graduates, someone has to assume the leadership role for us,” said Coach Valdez.
The Bobcats will be in the playoff hunt again this season, but PSJA and Edinburg North will have a lot to say about the district crown in 2010.
