The Edinburg North Cougars have had good seasons for the past two years going 19-12 (2008) and 22-79 (2009). This season the Cougars will continue to uphold their fine tradition of fielding competitive teams.
“We lost a lot of experience last year, but I believe we can be a good team once district begins,” said Coach Nick Cantu.
Noel Cruz (sr.), 3B/P, will return to anchor the Cougar infield. Cruz was a first team all-district selection last year at third base. Andrew Arteaga (jr.), OF/SS, was the Rio Grande Valley Newcomer of The Year in 2009. Arteaga could possibly move to SS from the outfield for the Cougars this year. Joel De Los Santos (jr.), OF, is another returning starter for the Edinburg North program this year. Economedes transfer Mark Esquivel, P/SS, is a very solid player who moved after two years at the Jaguar campus.
Other players who will receive playing time this year are Nick Escobar (jr.), P/1B; Danny Patiño (jr.), SS/P; Edgar Cordon (soph.), 1B; and Robbie Garces (soph.), P/C.
The Cougar program placed two players from last year,s (09) team in the college ranks: J.D. Escobar (North Central C.C. in Dallas) and Chris Cavazos (Texas A&M College Station). Last season’s catcher Eric Casillas signed a professional contract with a team from Monterrey Mexico.
The Cougars will be in the playoff hunt, and if they get any consistent pitching, they could make a run against PSJA for the district title.
