The Lobos have had an incredible run of district titles gaining their 5th in a row (09 shared with Brownsville Hanna). The Lobos are returning eight solid starters in 2010.
“We are returning 8 starters and we are hoping that experience will pay off for us,” said Coach Beto Leal.
District 32-5A MVP and one of the best players in South Texas will lead the Lobos this season. Alberto Rodriguez (sr.), SS/P, hit an incredible .594 with 17 2B, 13 3B, 2 HR, 42 runs, 32 SB, and 46 RBI last season. Rodriguez also has one of the best arms from the mound in our area. Mague Trevino (sr.), C/P, 1st team all-district had a very good junior year. Trevino is very valuable both defensively and offensively. Trevino hit .333 with 8 2B, 1 HR, 22 runs, 2 SB, and 19 RBI. Justin Granado (sr.), 2B/P, 1st team all-district and all-valley hit a very potent .474 with 10 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 46 runs, 23 SB, and 32 RBI. Carlos Rodriguez (sr.), 3B/P, was a 1st team all-district selection who hit .427 with 12 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 17 runs, 5 SB, and 33 RBI in 2009. Juan Benavidez (sr.), OF, 1st team all-district hit .321 with 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 16 runs, 4 SB, and 27 RBI.
Other players who will impact the Lobos season will be Victor Gaytan (jr.), an honorable mention all-district selection last year; Carlos Hernandez (jr.), OF/P; Enrique Negrete (sr.), OF; Albert Arismendi (sr.), 1B; J.J. Hernandez (soph.), 1B/P; Ricardo Paz (fresh.), INF/P; and Miguel Benavidez (soph.), INF.
“In order to compete pitching will need to improve this season,” said Coach Leal. Last season several of the top pitchers had arm problems, but this year the pitchers hope to be healthy.
Lopez is defi nitely one of the better teams in all of Region 4. Last season they lost in the Area round to defending region 4 champions Laredo United 5-3 in a one game playoff.
The Lobos have been bi-district champions for the last two years and are now looking forward to going further in the playoffs. The Lobos appear to be the early favorite, but most of the teams in district 32-5A will be very competitive and would love to take their district title.
