Head Coach: Armando Rangel, 1st season, 6th overall
Assistant Coaches: David Torres, Frank Muir, Hugo Salinas
2009 Record: 17-12, District: 10-4
Career Record: 71-77
School’s District Titles: 1983, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2003, 2004
Coach Armando Rangel returned to the Cowboys after spending three years at Brownsville Hanna and one at Brownsville Rivera. “We have a good group of players here at Porter, but we know that our district will be very competitive this season,” said Coach Rangel.
Senior, SS/P, Cristo Torres is one of the valley’s best players. The 6’2” Torres hit a whopping .548 last season. Twin brothers, juniors, Robert (3B) and Dago(C) Vidal will also play a major role for the Cowboys this season. Josh Garcia (jr.), P/1B; Angel Hernandez (sr.), P/OF; Frankie Rodriguez (sr.), 2B; Juan Zapata (sr.), OF; along with a very talented freshman Johnny Rangel (fr.), OF/INF/C will make up the core of the Porter team in 2009. Rangel is Coach Rangel’s son.
The Porter program has several players playing college ball at the University of Texas Brownsville. Julian Moya (06), Tyler O’Neal (07), Dennis Ortiz (08), Gus Henggeler (07), and Adrian Moya (09) all have played for Porter.
“We must play great defense and develop our pitching staff if we are going to compete for a district title,” said Coach Rangel.
Last season the Cowboys finished in 3rd place with an excellent 10-4 district record. The Cowboys then defeated the Edinburg North Cougars in a one game playoff (10-9) for the bi-district title. The Cowboys were then ousted by powerful Sharyland in the Area round.
With plenty of experience coming back, look for the Cowboys to be in the thick of the district race this season.
