The Falcons missed the playoffs last season, losing to Weslaco in a play-in game last year after finishing tied with Weslaco and San Benito. The Falcons rebuilt their team last season which only had one returning starter. This year with one more year of experience under their belt, the Falcons could reap the benefit of last season.
“One of our strengths is our pitching staff with most of them returning,” said Coach Morales. The Falcons will count on five pitchers this season.
Leo Saldivar (jr.), P/SS, was 4-5 on the mound with 2 saves and an ERA of 2.82 in 39 innings of work. Saldivar also had 38 strikeouts last year. Saldivar is also very valuable in the field and at the plate. He hit .221 with 3 2B, 1 3B, 13 runs, 7 SB, and a team leading 15 RBI in 2009. Edwin Castillo (sr.), P/SS, was 3-2 with 2 saves on the hill. Castillo had an ERA of 4.04 with 37 strikeouts in 43 innings of work. Castillo also hit .297 with 4 2B, 13 Runs, 2 SB, and 11 RBI for the Falcons in 2009. Sophomore (P/3B) Jerry Mireles is a very talented player who will have a major impact on the mound this season. Mireles hit .245 with 2 2B, 11 Runs, and 12 RBI. Pete Zamarripa (sr.), 2B/P, was 1-2 in limited time on the mound. Emilio Hernandez (sr.), P/OF, was 1-4 in 36 innings of work last season.
Other players on the Falcon roster are: James Ortiz (sr.), 1B, (.259); Roy Morris (sr.), C, (.214); Omar Mascorro (sr.),1B; Manny Salazar (sr.), OF, (.235); Raul Sanchez (sr.), OF, (.250); Eric Garza(sr.), OF; Cruz Garcia (sr.), OF/1B; and Christopher Ceballos (soph.), 2B/P.
The Falcon program has three players now playing college baseball. Gilbert Puente (07) UTB, J.D. Vela (08) Southwestern University, and Jesse Paredes (08) Schreiner University.
The success of the Falcons season will depend on the teamʼs hitting. “We need to be more consistent in hitting,” said Coach Morales. With an improved offense the Falcons could be in the playoff hunt.
