Last season, the Greyhounds made giant strides under 1st year Coach Jimmy E. Young. The Hounds lost in a play-in game against Weslaco for the right to go to the playoffs. The Hounds return several key players that have been on the varsity team since their freshman season.
“Adversity through failure is the key ingredient to success,” said Coach Young. “We have higher expectations for my staff and my players,” added Coach Young.
The Greyhounds will have 10 seniors who will contribute this season. Brandon Marquez (sr.), OF/P, 1st team all-district will man the outfi eld and mound for the Hounds this season. Marquez hit .245 with 3 2B, 3 3B, 12 Runs, 7 SB, and 6 RBI. Daniel Garza (sr.), P/3B, is another good player for the Hounds. Garza had 50 innings of work with an ERA of 2.64, 28 strikeouts. Garza was 2-7 with 1 save last season. Garza also has a good bat hitting .290 with 5 2B, 2 HR, 14 Runs, and 13 RBI. Eddie Fonseca (sr.), 1B/P/DH, is a very good left-hand hitting player. Fonseca hit .351 with 7 2B, 10 runs, 5 SB, and 21 RBI to lead the team last season. Fonseca was a 2nd team all-district selection last season. John Lopez (sr.), SS/P, will be counted on by Coach Young. Lopez hit .296 with 1 3B, 1 HR, 21 runs, 4 SB, and 13 RBI. The honorable mention all-district selection Lopez was also 5-4 on the mound with 35 strikeouts in 54 innings with an ERA of 3.46. Senior, Dillon Jones (C/OF) was also an honorable mention selection last season. Jones had 2 doubles, 5 runs, 1 SB, and 2 RBI last year. OF/P honorable mention all district, C.J. Carrizales returns after hitting .231 with 1 2B, 1 3B, 12 runs, 4 SB, and 7 RBI. Ryan Monsevalles (sr.), OF/P, returns after being named honorable mention all-district last year.
Promising newcomer, soph., OF/P, Jacob Puente will add more speed to the Hounds this season. Rounding out the rest of the team are; Trey Villarreal (sr.), OF/DH; Manuel Ortiz (sr.), 1B/P/ OF; Albert Vallejo (jr.), P/SS/OF; David Rodriguez (jr.), OF/P; and David Gonzalez (sr.), 1B/DH.
The projected lineup for the Greyhounds is as follows in order: Jacob Puente (LF), John Lopez (SS), Brandon Marquez (CF), Eddie Fonseca (DH), Daniel Garza (P), C.J. Carrizales (RF), Dillon Jones (C), Ryan Monsevalles (2B) and Manuel Ortiz (1B).
“We must believe in each other and have a lot of confi dence,” said Coach Young. “Our goal is to become men and use the game of baseball as a life lesson. We will have higher expectations for both our staff and players. We must finish games and eliminate mental errors this season.”
The Greyhounds are ready to take the next step under Coach Young who graduated from Converse Judson High School and went on to play at University of Texas Brownsville. It will not be easy for any team in district 32-5A to gain a district title with so much competition. The key to the Greyhound season will be their pitching staff. Look for the Hounds to be in the district hunt this season with all the returning players. The last playoff season for the Hounds was in 2003 when they also won a bi-district title.
