Soccer Scorpions, Former Scorpions Playing Pivotal Roles for Bravos FC

The recent success of the Rio Grande Valley Bravos FC is attributed to current or former members of the UTB/TSC men’s soccer team.

After starting the season 0-2, the Bravos are 2-2-1 after home victories May 28 and 29.

Scorpion seniors-to-be forward Juan Nava and goalkeeper Juan Gamboa, along with former Scorpion Mario Zamora, have played pivotal roles in recent games.

In a 1-1 tie to the Houston Leones on the road, Zamora scored the Bravos’ only goal of the game. Zamora played for the Scorpions during the 2008 season.

The Bravos played their first two home games May 28-29 at the Brownsville Sports Park and came up with their first two wins of the season.

The Bravos defeated the Dallas-Fort Worth Tornados, 1-0, with Nava scoring the only goal of the game. The next night, the Bravos downed the El Paso Patriots, 2-0, with Nava and Zamora scoring the goals. Gamboa played all 90 minutes in both victories and stopped one penalty kick in each game.

Juan de Dios Garcia, assistant women’s soccer coach at UTB/TSC, took over as head coach after the 0-2-1 start.

Also playing for the Bravos are Ricky Rodriguez, who will be a senior for the Scorpions this fall, and Enrique Rivera, who played his final season for the Scorpions in 2009.

Pablo Degollado and Edgar “Puppet” Gracia, who played for the Scorpions in 2007, are also members  of the Bravos.

The Bravos’ next game is Saturday, June 5 against the Houston Leones at the Brownsville Sports Park.
