Q&A: Randy Bermea Harlingen

Harlingen-vs.-San-Antonio-Madison-38-

956sports.com: The other night I was hearing rumors out of Texas Tech that you were going there.  When did you decide to go to Cal?

RB: From the outside looking in, Tech would seem like the ideal choice, but a lot of behind the scenes stuff, were things that I did not like at all. So I had decided on Tuesday night when I had a meeting with my family and coach and decided that I would spend the next 4 years of my life in California.

956sports.com: What was the deciding factor in going to Cal?  Was it the scenery (girls)?

RB: And all that played into the part of choosing Cal, #1 public university in the country, PAC12 is more stable, at all sports levels, than the Big 12. I felt that it was the best place I could be successful academically and athletically.

956sports.com: Did either of the schools offer you a chance to play football too?

RB: No, no offers for football, but like one of the coaches said, every track guy played football in high school, you just have to choose the one you feel will better for you in the long run.

956sports.com: Cal and Texas Tech are a lot different than the valley, are you ready for the change?

RB: Yes I am, I haven’t lived in the valley my whole life, so I am well aware of what the outside world has to offer, and I am excited to start this new chapter in my life.

956sports.com: You’re the second valley native to be highly recruited to a PAC 12, the first being Rene Rodriguez from Edinburg who went to Stanford.  He holds the school record for the 400.  When you’re done, do you see yourself holding a couple records?

RB: Most definitely, every time I start something new, I have new goals, and with new goals come new records that I am constantly aiming for.  That 400h record has a bullseye on it, and I’ll be gunnin’ for it shortly.

956sports.com: Track is an individualize sport, but you’re a football player too.  Do you think you’ll ever have the camaraderie that you had with your football team in track?

RB: I think a track teams bond is as good as a football teams bond, because, just like in football, you have goals of winning championships, and the teams are a lot smaller, and you know the guys who are serious about their stuff, in football, it’s a little harder to tell.

956sports.com: If you could script your last semester of high school, how would you track season go?  Can you picture two state titles?

RB: It would start off passing my AP exams, followed by 2 gold medals at the state meet, and hopefully representing the USA in Europe at the World Juniors.

956sports.com: You want to major in marketing, do you see yourself coming back to the valley or do you see yourself going to the Silicon Valley?

RB: Depending on what kind of job opportunities I have, I would want to live in Austin if possible, once my brother graduates, I will have no family in the valley, so I don’t see myself coming back.

956sports.com: Last but not least.  Do you think you’ll find anyone like Coach Gomez at Berkeley?

RB: Unless I run into Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, I don’t think so.. hahaha
