For the first time time at the Mission SQT three teams will make it to College Station and the state tournament.
With the number of teams making the tournament, the number of teams has increased from 16 to 24.
Looking at the polls for a favorite to make College Station is very difficult, but lets take a look at it.
Pool A at Pioneer
One would assume that Pioneer should or could be a favorite in their pool, but home-field advantage seems to have went out the door with Edcouch Elsa in the same pool.
Edcouch Elsa is a 7 on 7 regular at the state tournament, but will be working in a new QB with Marco Aguinaga graduating.
Harlingen South and Laredo Martin round out the bracket, but this looks to be a two horse race.
Pool B at Pioneer
7 on 7 football is not well loved by certain coaches, but nothing can give a program more hope for a good season than qualifying for the state tournament.
Pioneer qualified last season and used it to propel itself to a playoff appearance. This season Mission could be the underdog that comes of age.
Mission won last week’s tune up tournament at Mission Vets.
They’ll have to get pass Laredo Alexander, Rowe and La Joya.
Rowe went 1-1 last week in the McAllen 7 on 7 league, losing to McAllen Memorial and defeating McHi.
Laredo Alexander is the likely favorite in this pool. They’ve been here before, but have also been beat in the pools and have not advanced.
Pool A at Sharyland
Harlingen, East, Laredo Nixon, and Sharyland meet up at Richard Thompson stadium.
Sharyland has been a dominate team in 7 on 7 for a few years now, while Harlingen and East haven’t been known for their 7 on 7 prowess. Laredo Nixon is the question mark.
Sharyland looks to be the favorite in this pool, but Nixon could throw a wrench into their plans in College Station.
Pool B at Sharyland
Edinburg North, PSJA Memorial, Vela and Weslaco. Looking at the coaching changes alone, this has the most compelling matchup.
You have to love the Weslaco/Vela matchup at 10am. The first game of the day.
Michael Salinas team has always been a 7 on 7 juggernaut and Vela known for their offense during the regular season will look to unseat the favored Panthers.
PSJA Memorial hasn’t put together a successful 7 on 7 run since Louie Gonzalez, and Edinburg North could put up points in this bracket. They have a long ball attack with receivers who can get up for the ball.
Pool A at Mission Vets
Get ready to start chanting Gilpin now. Mission Vets has the team to make college station, and it won’t be because of Coach David Gilpin, but his QB, Landry Gilpin.
Vets will have to get by Laredo United South, a strong and talented McAllen Memorial team, and La Joya Palmview.
Both Palmview and Laredo United South enter the weekend with big question marks. Don’t know that much about them.
However, McAllen Memorial has some offensive and defensive weapons that could poise a problem for the Patriots. The only problem maybe that their offense doesn’t always lend itself to 7 on 7 football.
Memorial has never been known for changing it up when it comes to 7 on 7 offense. If they defeat Vets, it will because of talent and speed, this is Vets pool to lose.
Pool B Mission Vets
Lets just throw this out there now, this is a two team race between Mercedes and United. Mercedes is much like Weslaco in that they can usually reserve hotel rooms in College Station.
McAllen and PSJA haven’t been known for 7 on 7 performances, but they could sneak in if United loses early in the day.
Look for Mercedes and United to play 12 with 2-0 records.
Pioneer SQT winner-
The winner of the Pioneer/EE matchup should beat Laredo Alexander and move on to state.
Sharyland SQT winner-
Sharyland and Weslaco, with Weslaco winning the site and moving on to College Station.
Mission Vets SQT winner-
Mission Vets will play Mercedes, with Mercedes taking the ticket to state.
