2017 Weslaco East Wildcats

What’s up 956? New thread first post. Chosen to miss the post season last year by many not all, East reached the 3rd round again by beating Vela, Del Rio and falling to Cibolo Steele. Great season last year with a lot returning this year.

Offense returns 5 from last years team along with 4 year starters Roy Pedraza, Jc Vargas and 3 year qb Richard LF. Jaime Banuelos SR WR is another to watch. Jc all purpose player plays wr, rb, qb and Db and will this year as well.

Defense returns 8 starters from last season’s run including the front 4 led by DE Gerald Garza and Banda on the other side. As a soph LB Freddy Cardenas lead all tacklers with 114 and returns for his junior year. Jc Vargas 5 ints lead the team. Dbs bring experience.

The O is intact and the D returns a lot of experience that should make Weslaco East a tough team. Every game on the schedule looks tough beginning with Shary. Football is back and go Wildcats East Side Strong Side!

2017 Brownsville football central insider

It looks like it will be a same type of year for Brownsville football this year. Some good teams but nothing spectacular. Unless a big surprise from all Brownsville schools, the best team from Brownsville should be between St. Joseph Bloodhounds and Veterans Memorial Chargers. A couple teams get new coaches and a recent playoff team wants to make it a tradition while a couple look to rebound from a challenging year. Below is a quick run down on teams from Brownsville.

St. Joseph Bloodhounds
2016 record – 9-3
Coach – Tino Villareal entering 3rd year
Key return players – QB Kai Money, RB Anthony Cantu, DT Harrison Justis (6’4″)

St. Joe looks to win its 1st District championship since 1980 with Kai Money at the helm. This will be the last year for Money as he is a senior. A good progression of playoff showings (2015 lost to Midland Christian by a score and last year beating Nolan and loosing to Bishop Dunne in the State Quarter Finals) give St. Joe a feeling of a deep playoff run. Graduated DT Minor leaves a big hole in the D line that looks to be filled by Justis. Last year Justis improved as year went on and looks to have a good year anchoring the line. Helping at the receiving end WR Zolezzi (6’3″) and transfer WR Keaton Clackley look to be recipients of a potent offense who will surely put plenty of points on the score board.

Veterans Memorial Chargers
2016 record – 8-3
Coach – David Cantu entering 6th year
Key return players – QB Gustavo Vasquez, RB Abel Martinez

Losing to Veterans Memorial Patriots in the playoffs last year should make the Chargers that much more hungry for playoff success. Chargers lost to graduation plenty of starters, in fact only 2 on offense return in Vasquez and Martinez but Chargers who have not tasted a losing season in their short history look to fill in the holes left by those graduated. At 35 and 19 since its inception, Chargers look to make noise in the playoffs and challenge for district title this year after 2 years of losses in Bi-District and sharing the DC last year with Mercedes.

Lopez Lobos
2016 record 7-4
Coach – Jason Starkey entering 5th year
Key return players – WR Jose Echevarria, WR Johnny Ibarra, ATH Leo Alaniz

Tasted playoffs last year for 1st time in just over a decade and competed in the Bi-District round vs Laredo Nixon. Lopez brought a veteran defense who was lost a plenty due to graduation this year. Looking to change the expectation of success, Coach Starkey has the Lopez boys believing. This year will be a year opposing teams will look Lopez on their schedule and want to beat them vs just an automatic win in their schedule. This is a sing of an improving program as Lopez looks to progress and not regress with the help of a good solid receiving team. Defense should still be strong but not 15ppg allowed stong like last year.

Hanna Golden Eagles
2016 record – 3-7
Coach – Mark Guess entering 2nd year
Key returning player – WR/QB Joe Cavazos

After having interm tag taken off, Guess looks to add success to Hanna after last year. Hanna plays in tough district who looks to have no chance at making the playoffs. Nevertheless Hanna will and could play spoiler to a team. Solid tackling is a strength but Hanna needs to find itself strong QB play in order to challenge teams in 2017

Rivera Raiders
2016 record – 1-9
Coach – Tom Chavez entering 6th year in his second stint
Potential special player – Jake Milam

After 3 rd round playoff appearance in 2015, Rivera has gone 1 and 19 these past 2 years. This has to be the toughest stretch in Tom Chavez career. The horizon looks brighter as Rivera returns players from last year that will feature RB Quintae Smith who is needing to bulk up but has good speed should help the running game. Rivera does have a very interesting prospect in Jake Milam at QB who is a good 6’1″ and has a good arm and have football pedigree as he is son to coordinator Milam. Even with a better looking future at Rivera a pplayoff run in 2017 will need many miracles to happen for it to happen. 32-6A will be tough on Rivera again this year.

Porter Cowboys
2016 record – 0-10
Coach – Carlos Uresti entering 1st year

New year new coach same results. No matter what Porter does it will not make the playoffs this year. Uresti is a good in game teacher but along with Pace they were plenty of better options at coaches. another 0-10 or 1-9 year is on the horizon for the Cowboys.

Pace Vikings
2016 record 3-7
Coach – Danny Pardo entering 1st year

Good were the days in the 80s when Pace was a valley power and even a South Texas power who once beat a State Ranked Gregory Portland in the playoffs. Gone are those days when valley team wanted to be and beat Pace. Now here are the days when a subpar coach leaves and another one from the same cloth comes in. Not all kids went to camp in shape but Pace does have a couple of talented kids who should help Pace win some games but still miss the playoffs.

Again 2017 in Brownsville will be another year but nevertheless we will root for all kids who dedicate time to play this game we all love which is Texas high school football.

2017 McAllen Memorial Mustangs

Offense should be really good Campbell has gotten stronger saw him at Gold’s the other day and he has put on some muscle. Sean needs to get more touches he’s an athlete. Like every season for the Mustangs how they do on D will determine if they can make any noise in the playoffs because their offense will always put up numbers
