Los Fresnos OF Heading To JuCo In Lufkin

Joseph Munoz’ junior season with Los Fresnos baseball was one to write home about. The Texas Sports Writers Association named Munoz the Class 6A First Team designated hitter in August, this after The Brownsville Herald crowned him the All-Metro offensive player of the year in June.

That kind of recognition drew notice from longtime Angelina College head coach Jeff Livin, who offered the Falcons senior a scholarship. On Thursday, Munoz signed his letter of intent to join Livin’s Roadrunners.

As the Los Fresnos designated hitter in 2017, Munoz had seven doubles, five triples and a home run, finishing with 28 RBI and 29 runs scored, as well as a .563 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .768.

Rally Rattlers: Sharyland Stages Epic Five-Set Comeback Over Brownsville Veterans
On opening night of the Rio Grande Valley volleyball playoffs, Monday’s best game was at Weslaco high school, as 32-5A champion Brownsville Veterans took on Sharyland with a bi-district title at stake.
The Rattlers took a tight first set 25-23, but the Chargers charged back in the 2nd set behind some of senior Cynthia Garcia’s 19 kills, and evened it up with a 25-23 set of their own.
Veterans looked to have all the momentum, and with seniors Bianca Cardenas and Bridget Himes leading the way, the Chargers took the third frame 25-18 and were up 16-10 in the 4th, 9 points away from advancing to the next round.
But then Sharyland caught fire, sophomore sensation Tristen Maddox providing the spark with some timely kills, and the Rattlers rallied for a 25-20 4th set victory.
Then in the deciding 5th set, junior Estefania Hinojosa and her 21 kills helped Sharyland complete the rally, winning 15-12, taking the match 3-2, and advancing to the area round.
Next, the Rattlers will face the winner of the San Antonio Harlandale/Corpus Christi Flour Bluff playoff this coming weekend.

Sharing Not For Lionettes, La Feria Takes Outright District Title At Raymondville

On the final night of the 32-4A volleyball regular season, La Feria traveled to Raymondville looking to clinch the outright district title, while the BearKats could share in the championship with a home victory.

The Lionettes took the first set impressively, but committed many unforced error to drop the second.

La Feria outside hitter Myah Salas, first team all-district last season as a junior, made her argument for district MVP this year with a career-high 37 kills. That helped finish the fight for the Lionettes, who take the final two sets, the game, and the outright 32-4A title, 3-1 (25-16, 18-25, 25-14, 25-18).
