Brownsville Veterans Defense Holds Off Edcouch-Elsa In Nailbiter

Published

Brownsville Veterans and Edcouch-Elsa, two teams at the top of the District 32-5A standings, met Thursday night at Sam’s Stadium, and when the final whistle blew, it was the Chargers holding on for the 21-19 victory.

Veterans charged into the lead behind Chargers quarterback Gustavo Vasquez, who threw for two scores and ran for another, accounting for the 21-10 lead his team took into the halftime locker room.

La Maquina Amarilla’s defense stood strong in the second half, allowing no points, and climbing back to within two points with just under five minutes remaining in the game.

From there, it was star time for the Brownsville Veterans defense, who broke up what would have been a game-tying two-point conversion, while also coming up with two huge turnovers, the second of which, an interception by Sammy Chapa, sealed the game in favor of the Chargers by the final of 21-19.

Next up for Brownsville Veterans (5-1, 3-0) in week eight is a Saturday night contest against Brownsville Lopez (6-0, 3-0) with what could be the 32-5A title at stake.

Edcouch-Elsa (4-2, 2-1), meanwhile, returns home to face rival Mercedes (4-2, 2-1) Friday in another game with playoff implications.

Brownsville Veterans' Cassie Valdez Signs With UTSA Softball

From the time Cassie Valdez first stepped on to a softball field, she knew this was the sport for her. On Tuesday, that dedication to softball paid off, as the Brownsville Veterans senior pitcher signed a letter of intent to play for Division I UT San Antonio.

Valdez helped lead the Chargers to their first ever district title this past spring, amassing a record of 13-5 with 193 strikeouts on the mound, while batting .471 with 55 RBI at the plate.

Valdez credits a pre-tournament combine in the summer after her sophomore season for putting her on the Roadrunners radar, and an unofficial visit this past spring for cementing her decision to attend UTSA.
