32-6A Volleyball: Los Fresnos Clinches Playoff Spot, San Benito Takes Sole Possession Of Third

Published

With just one week left in the high school volleyball regular season, four 32-6A teams are fighting for the three remaining playoff spots, and Tuesday night, all four met for two important games only 6 miles apart.
Second place Los Fresnos traveled to Harlingen, tied for third in district, for an epic match.
It looked like it would be the Falcons in straight sets early, as Los Fresnos won the first two games 25-17 and 25-14.
But the Cardinals staged a gutty comeback, led by seniors Yazmine Martinez and Kirsten Kattan, and two 25-23 games later, and this one was tied at two apiece.
But in the final set, Los Fresnos puts it away, Giselle Ibarra led the way with 25 kills to go along with 25 digs, and the Falcons take the match 3-2, take sole possession of 2nd place in district, two games behind Brownsville Rivera, Los Fresnos’ next opponent on Saturday.
Meanwhile over at San Benito high school, Brownsville Hanna, just out of the top four, was trying to climb into a postseason berth taking on the Greyhounds, who started the night tied with Harlingen in third.
San Benito took game one 26-24, but the Eagles replied in the second set, evening it up at a set apiece.
After that, though, it was all Lady Hounds, San Benito wins the match 3-1, taking sole possession of third place in 32-6A.

Marichalar out at Edcouch Elsa

Matt Stepp from Texas Football.com reports that Edcouch Elsa has let Joe Marichalar go and are looking to hire a new head football coach.

The Yellow Jackets went 5-5 this season, 3-4 in district.

Rumors started swirling before the season that Marichalar needed to win district to save his job.

This seemed like an impossible task with the amount of talent in 32-5A this year.

Marichalar took over for Joe Solis five seasons ago and led Edcouch Elsa as deep as three rounds twice.

The question now is who will take over for Marichalar?

Let’s throw out some possible replacements.

Tony Villarreal – Former Weslaco head coach
– You have to like the idea of Tony V going back to the mid-valley.

Gene Garza – Former La Villa head coach and current Edcouch Elsa offensive coordinator.
-He knows the kids and he’s won before.

Max Habecker – Former Roma head coach
-He brought Roma from Dark Ages into the light, and has proven to be able to build a program.

Steve Marroquin – Former PSJA head coach.
-He went to Hanna as the OC and look what happened.

Oscar Campos – current OC at Edinburg.
-In two years, Edinburg went from not making the playoffs, to 2nd and 3rd place in district.

Israel Gonzalez – Lyford head coach
-Not that I would want to see him leave Lyford, but he did good things over there, imagine at a 5A.

Tony Harris – Former McHi coach
-Harris hasn’t coached since McHi, but his son is done with school.  Wouldn’t it be nice to see him on the sidelines again?

Mike Uribe – PSJA Memorial
The current head coach at PSJA Memorial has been slowly rebuilding a program that was in the gutters a few years back.  Uribe not only has a track record of winning (Mercedes prior), but he also somehow gets other programs to win as well.   Look at PSJA Mem’s volleyball, softball, basketball programs.

Christian Navarro – Former Valley View head coach, current AD at Edcouch Elsa
-Navarro coached two years at Valley View going 6-4, 1-9.  He was also the coach at Santa Rosa for two years.  He’s been with E-E since 2013 as solely the Athletic Director.
