For years McAllen’s three high schools have been perennial powers across the Valley on the volleyball court.
That hasn’t changed this year.
The three schools find themselves again atop of the 956sports.com top 10 poll.
McHi has won all three of its tournaments this season en route to a 26-1 record and the No. 1 ranking as district play is just around the corner. McHi’s only loss came in the first game of the season versus Laredo Alexander. Since then, they captured tournament victories in the McAllen Poundfest, the San Antonio ISD and the Sharyland tournaments.
McAllen Memorial is second in the poll with a 22-3 record. Two of the Lady Mustang losses have come to Laredo Alexander and the other to city rival McHi.
Nikki Rowe comes in at the No. 3 spot.
“I can’t remember a year in the last 15 years where the McAllen schools weren’t in the top five in the Valley, we have some strong programs here,” said Memorial head coach Lorena Lopez. “The kids here love volleyball, there are a lot of club teams where the girls train all year.”
Challenging for those top three spots are two Edinburg schools that could make some waves as early as today. Edinburg High, ranked No. 4 with a 19-4 record, plays at Memorial at 6:30 p.m. today while No. 5 Edinburg Vela, who has split two matches with Nikki Rowe also travels to McAllen for a third time against the Lady Warriors.”
Vela defeated Nikki Rowe in the most recent matchup.
“It was a very close match,” said Vela coach Araceli Ortega. “Tonight is going to be very difficult again.”
