Canales Looks to Lead Blue Devils to Promise Land in 2016

monte alto 2016 Football Preview

(MONTE ALTO) – Osiel Canales has been pretty successful while serving as head boys’ basketball coach at Monte Alto High School.

Ever since the Monte Alto basketball team started competing in UIL sanctioned events in the 2012 and 13 season, Canales led the Blue Devils to the postseason in three out of the four years and even made a nice little run in their inaugural year.

Monte Alto advanced all the way to the third round of the playoffs in their first year and made school history in the process as being the first program to clinch a postseason berth.

Now Canales is looking to add a little more history to the books by helping the football team head to the playoffs for the first time as he took over as head football coach and athletic director for the Blue Devils.

Canales took over for Cesar Castillo who accepted a job as defensive coordinator for Donna North High School in the spring.

Since their inception in 2011, Monte Alto has yet to get a taste of the postseason while playing at the 1A, 2A and the 3A level.

Last year, it appeared as the Blue Devils may very well end their postseason drought as they went 3-3 in non-district play and had high hopes entering district play.

But their district wasn’t a friendly one as they went 0-4 which left them having to wait another year while trying to punch their ticket.

The Blue Devils enter the 2016 season with high hopes as they not only have some new blood at the head coaching ranks, but also enter a district with new competition in 16-3A, Division II.

Monte Alto will be paired up with the likes of Odem, London, Banquete, Hebbronville and Skidmore-Tynan in 16-3A.

And while the Blue Devils will definitely have their hands full, they have some key players coming back that could very well make them competitive thanks to a couple of All-District selections on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, Hector Carlos will carry the load at running back for the Blue Devils this season and Apolonio Martinez will anchor the offensive line. Both Carlos and Martinez are seniors and three-year starters and Canales will rely on their leadership on that side of the ball.

Defensively, safety Carlos Espitia will be the leader on that side of the ball and will get some help from defensive back Jose Rosales.

The new era for Monte Alto football has begun and hopefully with Canales’s success in basketball, they can finally get the Monkey off of their backs and get a taste of what it’s like competing in the playoffs.
