The Chargers Are Beginning Their Second Season Of Play

Coach Ruben Aymes will begin his second season with a little more experience than last season where the Chargers went 1-23 in their first season of play. Seven returning starters will be the key in order for the Chargers to become more competitive. “Our success will be determined by how much fundamental baseball we can play,” said Coach Aymes. Junior Robert Gonzales is an excellent player who made first team all-district last season at shortstop. Gonzales will lead a group of seven juniors this season. The Chargers have no seniors on their roster. Lee Sanchez could be another key as he will be doing the catching along with some pitching after transferring from Porter where he was the starting catcher. Veterans will have to take small steps but, once this program gets going they will be yet another strong baseball program from the Brownsville area.

The Patriots Must Replace Top Pitcher In 2012

The Mission Veterans Patriots will have to replace two of their top two players from a year ago in Desi Villarreal and Arnold Gonzalez. The Patriots were dealt a heavy blow when 1st Team All-District player Adrian Morales was badly injured during football season and Coach Smith believes it will be difficult to return with a torn ACL. Julian Fernandez, Danny Gutierrez, Aggie Villarreal, and newcomer Edward Peña will all have to step up on the mound for the Patriots this season. “We will have to replace a lot of speed at the top of the order (53 stolen bases) and defense up the middle with the loss of Desi and Arnold. Villarreal also logged 60 innings on the mound for us last season, so finding a quality replacement will be a key,” said Coach Casey Smith beginning his 3rd season at Veterans. “For us to be successful in this tough district we must play as a team and rely heavily on defensive fundamental,” added Coach Smith

Play-offs. With tens teams in District 32-4A all teams will have little to no chance to gain experience with non-district games. The Patriots finished 4th for the second consecutive season then losing to perennial power Corpus Christi Calallen in bi-district action. The Patriots believe they are a playoff team but, they are looking for a better seed in 2012.

District 32-4A is no easy task with the fact that there are ten teams in the District. Valley View just missed the playoffs after finishing in fourth place right behind Mission Veterans. The 2012 version of the Tiger team would like nothing better than to jump right back into the playoff scene. “We need everyone to stay healthy and eligible. We need to concentrate and stay focused on every pitch. We also need to be able to adjust to the highs and lows of the game,” said Coach Galaviz beginning his fifth season in Valley View. Juniors Jorge Lozano and Jesus Tovar have the talent to lead the Tigers to the playoffs. “We need to do what is right and do our best. Most importantly we need to have fun playing this great game,” added Coach Galaviz. Look for the Tigers to have a successful season if the Tigers come up with some quality pitching.

Huskies Will Continue To Improve In 2012

The Huskies are having growing problems due to the fact that the school is beginning its third year of existence. 1st Team All-District Israel Elizondo will return for his senior season to lead the Huskies in 2012. Elizondo, Angel Garcia, Aaron Villarreal, Edgar Espinoza, Carlos Menchaca, Elocadio Reyna, and Jose Salinas all have experience on the hill and they will have to step up in order for the Huskies to start to climb the district ladder. The Huskies were 5-20 in 2011 (9th place in district) and 6-18 in 2010 (7th place in district). Getting to the middle of the pack in this very tough district would be a successful season for the Huskies. Juarez-Lincoln supporters will have to be patient and let Coach Guajardo develop a program.
