A collection of the best local talent will face off in La Joya tonight for the Boys Baseball All Star Game.  Broadcast of the game will begin at 6pm with Keith Lavon leading our broadcast.  Our broadcast tonight is brought to you by R2L Studios.

Coach David Cantu will try and create a spark that former Coach Jim Helms couldn’t find during his tenor at Brownsville Rivera.  Cantu is bringing a winning mentality from Los Fresnos and while it will be hard to find success early, he does have the foundation to do it.  The Raiders have two offensive lineman in Fitzgerald Cerda and Hector Orozco two build the team with.

Edinburg enters this season coming off a surprisingly good season in which the Bobcats defeated a number 1 seed in Hanna and taking Del Rio to the wire in the second round of the playoffs.

The Bobcats lost a lot of talent and leadership on both lines, and their top notch receiving core is gone.  The Bobcats will rely on Steve Guerrero (QB) to get the wideouts ready for the season.  The Bobcats also may pass more than we’ve seen in the past.

The defense should be one of the best in the valley.  The Bobcats have returning linebacker Ciro Reyna and a host of skilled, big defensive backs that will make it tough to run and throw against the Bobcats.

Exit coach Valdez and enter Hector Garcia.  A new coaching change won’t necessarily mean victories for the Cowboys.  Porter returns 13 starters (7 offense: 6 defense), second highest in the district.

The team is young and after going 1-9 last year, this team lacks a winning experience.  It might not be a bad thing to look respectable in the district.  Three wins would be a great improvement over last year, and a great stepping stone for a team in construction.

Many questions hang over the Los Fresnos Falcons this year. Scott Ford is now at Nacogodoches and Clint Finley takes over at the valley’s premiere program. The Falcon faithful will be looking to see if they keep the spread offense. For the first time in five years the Falcons aren’t entering the season as district champs.

32-5A won’t be as strong as it was last year, and conceivably the Falcons could win district. With four starters returning on both sides of the ball, Los Fresnos has leadership returning. Castillo (QB) will lead the offense, but will it be the offense we’re accustomed to?
