There’s something you can count on every night of the high school basketball schedule: upsets.
Tuesday night in the RGV it happened again.
The La Joya Coyotes beat up on 956Sports.com’s No.3-ranked McAllen Rowe 54-41 handing the Warriors (20-6, 4-1) their first district loss, meanwhile, the Coyotes stay undefeated in District 30-6A and are up one full game Rowe halfway through league play. No. 8-ranked La Joya improves to 21-7, 5-0.
No. 4-ranked Edinburg held serve and beat crosstown rival Economedes in a slow slugfest 42-37. The win sets up the match up many have been waiting for on Friday when the Bobcats visit No. 2-ranked Edinburg Vela in what may be one of the most entertaining basketball games of the year.
Also on the boys side, Sharyland Pioneer was able to score a huge victory when it downed a tough Laredo Nixon squad 64-54 keeping itself alive at 4-4 in District 31-5A. No. 1 ranked Weslaco, Mercedes, Los Fresnos, Harlingen South and McHi all won their games Tuesday night.
The girls’ schedule did not have as much upheaval. No. 1 Edinburg easily dispatched Economedes, but PSJA North lost for the second straight game and for the second-straight time to PSJA Memorial. The No. 10 Lady Wolverines (18-12, 6-2) are playing confident, are on a role and up the rankings. They face Edinburg High next week and look to avenge a 52-46 loss earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Edinburg travels to Vela Friday (same as boys) for 6 p.m. game with district implications on the line.
In other girls action Tuesday night, No. 6 Harlingen defeated No. 9 Harlingen South for a big District 32-6A win, Mercedes beat Donna, Hidalgo beat La Feria, No. 4 McAllen Memorial won over Juarez-Lincoln, No. 3 Brownsville Vets downed Pace. However, No. 5 McHi lost to LJ Palmview in an upset.
Told you, there’s always upsets. That’s why they play the game.
