Defense Looks to Lead Progreso to First Winning Season Since 2000

Progreso football 2016 High School Football Preview

(PROGRESO) – If the Progreso Red Ants football team is going to produce their first winning season since the year 2000, they will have to rely on a strong and experienced defensive group to accomplish just that.

The Red Ants bring back a wealth of talent on the defensive side of the ball as nine starters return from 2015. The heart and soul of the defense will be at the linebacker position as outside linebacker Manuel Flores and middle linebacker Hector De Los Santos will lead the way.

Flores led the team in tackles last year with 35 while De Los Santos was the sack leader with six.

Offensively, Progreso brings back five on that side of the ball and will rely on their running backs Oscar Munoz and Steven Alaniz to lead the charge. Munoz led the team in rushing as he finished the 2015 season with 600 on the ground.

Quarterback Joshua San Roman will also play a key role in the Red Ants offense as he takes over under center and appears to have a bright future ahead of him at that position.

San Roman will look for his receivers Rey Garcia and Manuel Flores to help him spread the field and both possess a ton of speed and skill.

Besides looking to produce their first winning record in 15-plus years, Progreso would love nothing more than to get into the postseason as they haven’t been there since 1990.

The task will definitely be a tough one as they face the likes of Orange Grove, Rio Hondo, Port Isabel, Raymondville and West Oso in District 16-4A Division II.

And while the experts feel that the Red Ants won’t be one of the representatives from their district in the postseason, they certainly have the experience on the defensive side of the ball and enough playmakers on offense to silence the critics.
