AUSTIN - Pecos High School was put on probation for one year and publicly reprimanded Wednesday after officials determined the school violated Texas' new steroids testing policies.

University Interscholastic League spokeswoman Kim Rogers said someone at the school violated confidentiality rules that are supposed to prevent athletes from knowing they are about to be tested. She said she had no specifics on who was involved or how the rules were broken.

UIL rules allow only a handful of administrators to know about 48 hours in advance that testers from the National Center for Drug Free Sport are coming to a campus.

Rogers said testing was conducted at the school without a problem, but could not provide further details.

Pecos officials declined to appear at a UIL disciplinary meeting Wednesday, Rogers said. The school had notified the UIL it would not challenge the punishment.

Messages left with Pecos Principal Cindy Duke and other school officials were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Texas started the nation's largest steroids testing program earlier this year.

Figured released in July showed that only two of the first 10,000 students tested were found to be using steroids. The students who tested positive weren't identified by name, school or sport.

Four tests came back unresolved and three students refused to be tested. One athlete left the testing area without cause or approval, and 18 missed the mandatory testing without an excused absence.

GNC wouldn't sell anything illegal. "some" valley players should get tested I'm sure they'd find more than just steroids.

I never said it was illegal. They are performance enhancers but these are chemicals that have no business being taken by jr. high kids

I feel bad for the kids who didnt use steroids if any at all did.
they get suspended for a year for doing nothing.
They should allow the students to join other high schools.
