Lee, reassigned
http://www.rgvsports.com/articles/mission_3534___article.html/rodriguez_season.html
Mission High football coach/athletic coordinator Tom Lee will be reassigned and was informed late Wednesday evening. The decision was reached after a Mission CISD Board of Trustees meeting.
Mission CISD superintendent Oscar Rodriguez, who made the decision to reassign Lee and Longoria, said the district "needed to go in a different direction" with its football teams.
In six seasons leading the Eagles, Lee went 24-36. This season, his team recovered from an 0-4 start to make the playoffs, finishing fourth in District 32-4A.

Mission needs to look outside of the valley if they want to get back to the glory days. A good passing game needs to be implemented into that program if they will ever make a run in the playoffs again. look at history how many running teams from mission made runs in the playoffs. Um None.
Landry Era - Balanced
Rodriguez, Valdez, Hernandez Era - Pass
Detmer Era - Only Pass (Koy still holds the state record for most pass attempts in a game)
Coach dicuss E. Taylor Era - Pass
Mission needs to get smart and not let politics decide this

Especially with the pretty good receivers we have and Gilbert's passing ability.

I should know a little about these guys since they're team mates.:D Gilbert is definitely a good player, double threat. He can run and pass, both of which he's pretty good at. Hopefully, we get someone who won't let all this talent go to waste.

well honestly ol'buzz do u think anybody from the valley can do it
It depends if you're talking about winning district or winning a state title...
In either case, what you are looking for is going to come with just a new head coach. It will only come from a paradigm shift within the athletic program. (This of course requires the cooperation and combined effort of the school board, administration, athletes, and finally the head coach and his staff. )
When I say paradigm shift, i'm talking about a change in the attitude, beliefs, work habits, and so on of the team from the high-school all the way through the jr. high levels. Then and only then will a team develop a winning tradition.
davi34
12-29-2008, 01:37 PM
yea i comletely agree with that statement. but with the team the eagles have coming back i think a pass happy coach is what they need somebody opposite of most of these valley coaches who believe in three yards and a cloud of dust type of running game

If the coach is any good and has the least bit of smarts, he will realize what he has going for him (with his current athletes) and make the appropriate changes to accommodate his system.
But, I see your point about old school coaches that don't believe in change.

I'm from Mission and I keep hearing 3 names being thrown out like if all three were getting the job. I prefer one over the others by a landslide if it were an election, but that is just me. The one guy I prefer is going to apply and that was told to me by one of his relatives in M town. I don't like to talk about names until I officially see the actual list of applicants in writing and even then, they can always pull their name out in the middle of the whole process.
But trust me, you guys will get a coach who will take what Tom Lee had there with the talent and he should be able to make the playoffs and potentially a 2 or 3 deep run.
Hey, somebody told me Gilbert Is playing basketball on the JV team. Is this true, if so, that should help him be a better runner to make cuts with more agression.

Now the two Mission Ex Coaches should throw their names into the Mercedes position. Should be considered since they both know this district and the competition quite well.

What are the chances Mercedes will hire a new coach before Mission?? That would be a tough one for Mission...unless of course they hire one of the 2 let go (which I don't see happening).
Better get on board quick! The pool of applicants is what it isn't going to change much between now and September now that the firings are pretty much done (Hidalgo, South, Missions).

lol "Mitchen Eagles"..... Spoke to Taylor at BJ's a week ago, very sharp guy, he almost had me wanting to tackle the waiter ha! I asked him about the Mitchen job and he said it would be a nice job to have. I could see him at the helm of some program soon. Yeah I think that would blow Mission High's football marketing up for the youth here! Imagine the excitement that would start. Only thing is Taylor doesn't have head coaching experience (not saying he couldn't do job), and these people want experience...i.e "you have to lose 60% of your games to have "experience"?"

He's at LJ now. Said he was relegated to being the WR coach solely. I asked if he implemented any offensive plays, but he said no one never asked that of him at LJ. He said its been tough there with the 3 way split and that this situation has made him a better coach. He told me his kids didn't even know what simple coverages were when he got there. Also said he'd run a program under a collegiate schedule, told me Detmer and Dicus both ran their programs under such a schedule. I also didn't know he had been under Urban Meyer at Notre Dame, he also said he keeps contact with his ex WR coach at A&M (now Houston Cougar Head Coach) Kevin Sumlin. He seems greatful to have been blessed to be influenced and taught by some great coaches, (Detmer, Urban Meyer (current Florida coach), Sumlin (Houston) , R.C Slocum, Tom Coughlin, and Kevin Gilbride (NY Giants OC). If Eagle440 is right then this Mission job is sewn up for Pena, but Taylor would have been an interesting pick or consideration. Wish we had room at McHi for him.

It was his first season and lets be honest....LJ doesn't have the talent. All I remember is that they never did a drop back pass. I think vs us they were bootlegging the entire time, the wide receivers were non-existant because we just zone blitzed the hell out of them and QB was running for his life whole game. The guy knows his stuff. Normal people or coaches will never get the amount of knowledge he's gotten from the QUALITY of coaches he's been around. He had to start somewhere, anywhere I guess....since his last name isn't Garza and he has NO beer belly I'm positive he has no compadre skills.

What kind of offense was Lee running Eagle440? Pass %, Run %. 3 wide receivers, 4 wide receivers, pro?
LOL Lee never had an offense to begin with.

Well they're gonna open the positions until Jan. 27 for submission of applications. I got a text message today that a certain person is going to come back to Mission "according to word"!!
The board will look for the best qualified and most successful guy in mind that would do well with our student athletes. We'll see what we both get in Mcisd.
Who's this person? :batman::handball:

first you say he would be a fantastic pick to run the mission program...not just take part in improving it...but RUNNING it...and now you make an excuse for his recievers not running good routes by saying "it was his first year!" Man are you confused.

? It was his first year there, NO? YESSSS. Now, let me put it in KiDdIe SkriBbLe so you can understand.....Their passing game provides very little success because they "roll out" every pass...So....its very hard to get open when the defense knows you are limited pattern wise with a roll out....Following along? Don't want to lose you...K, A QB rolling to either right or left side is now relegated to throwing to that side...K, So there are only certain routes that can be run because there is NO backside as in a normal dropback, Thus THEY HAD NO CHANCE. The guy does a good job, he's had to get in somewhere...ANYWHERE. ABC 123 GOOOOOD BOY!

Hopefully they just make a good decision. At the end of the day we all (Mission fans) want to see our kids enjoying the game. Get someone who inspires and motivates, knows their football, and things will fall into place. I guess I'll have no choice but to support whoever. I'm a season ticket holder.

gohorns and i are not the same person. mission just needs to get somebody who would be the best fit for that program. i do agree that too many jobs down here are based on the compadre system and not what is best for the school - find a good experienced coach, an energitic coach, a person with good people skills, and make a list of the pros and cons - THEN decide what is best. mission just needs to make up their mind what direction they want their programs to go

If its in the bag who's brother's in law, cousin, daddy, or son is gonna help the decision maker's (AD, Board, etc.) regain some credibility when hiring head football coaches? Who at Vets?
We sit here and blame these coaches its not their fault.....blame the one's who make premature selections and under table dealings.

I agree with eagle440- under the table crap- let's open our eyes and ears Mission community- we need the community to rally around the guys that are best for the kids- they need youth- motivators and someone who generally cares about the kids- Gilpin is a great fit for vets- kids respond to him, motivates like crazy, is smart and knows his football- bring in taylor as his wide reciever coach- rodriquez for his quarterbacks- you got something there- Mission needs to keep the board out of it and listen to the kids- look at what they want- couldn't hurt- why do we keep going out of town for coaches when we have some really good guys who have given a lot to Mission - they know the town, the kids and we all want the same thing- kids having fun and winning games- come on Mission wake up!

Last time we listened to the kids we got stuck with coach Lee for a year or 2. If you let the kids choose they are going to want someone that's their friend and not their coach. I say let the coaches resume speak for itself and not hire because the person has been with the kids for so long.

I believe if I read this correctly, Baby Boomer is trying to say there are still coaches in the Mission area who have been here (Gilpin- 18-20 years, I think)and have coached with some of the best and haven't been given a chance (DC/OC) due to the New Head Coaches bringing in there own people. Motivator he is and the kids respond to him, Loyalty, what administration wouldn't want a coach who is loyal to his community, and knows the game of FOOTBALL. Some old Mission allumnist have come and gone- why come back, WAKE UP MISSION!!! Get coaches that will get the wins- the only way is to get coaches who motivate the kids. Leave the Pena drama out of Mission, and if Casas wanted greener pastures in La Joya (retirement), stay and Retire there. Both Schools deserve the best, not what the Board's compadres think is the best.

My thoughts on a couple of things and respnses to a couple of posters. This is a great forum! I have enjoyed reading it all moning. I wish I had known about it sooner.
I agree with Baby Boomer and Joker about Coach Gilpin being the rright guy to hire at Vets. Both mentioned the kids wanting him to be the new coach. I know for a fact that this is true. My son played there (and I have 2 more headed that way soon which is why I have taken such an interest in this matter) and he told me that evryone wanted him to be new coach. I asked around myself, and that is what they want. Eagle Maximus, I saw where you wrote that it shouldn;t matter what the players think. the example you gave was Tom Lee at Mission. 2 dfferent people, 2 different personalities, 2 different coaching styles. Also Lee was at Mission for two years only before he was given the job-no application necessary. Gilpin has been in Mission 20 years. Loyalty to a distrcit and city has to play some part in this process. I agree that kids shouldnt make the rulesbut there opinion has tobe listened to. after all, they are the one that will be playing for the new coach.
Eagle Prophet, saw in another place where you asked whether the board should give Gilpin a chance? I assume by you (and Eagle Maximus) name thatnyou are Eagle fans? were you fans during the 90's when CoachnGilpin was a coachat Mission High? Did you not hear or observe for yourself the sam things that have been said on here? Motivator, intense, cares about kids, etc. ? I have observed him both at Mission and vets and I feel that the school district needs to be made aware that the majority of people in Mission who care about this at all support Coach Gilpin.
we are rooting for you Coach Gilpin. Good luck.

i have no problem with the board picking Gilpen at all. i hear he's a great coach and many of his students care about him. I honestly don't care who the Patriots pick at all they could go ahead and pick Coach Lee if they want to. What im trying to say is look at the coaches resume don't just go by what the kids want. I understand that we should listen to the kids opinions but that shouldn't be why a varsity coach gets hired.

I would be totally content to see Coach Gilpin as the selection at Vets. I'm surprised he didn't put in for both schools since he would actually get two shots at being looked at. Regardless, the guy is a football nut and a good one at that. I ask if he should be given a chance because I actually feel that he could be a good coach over at Vets.
Oh and I am an Eagle fan, a very avid one, but still support the Patriots as well. It's gonna be an interesting ride from here until the day that those two spots are filled.

So do you think Pena will be hired at Mission with ALL his baggage? I don't know the guy but character seems to be an issue when his name is brought up. Gilpin would do great at Vets. I would really like to see Gilpen get hired for the Vets job. He has a lot of experience in football compared to Lee in my opinion.
Coaches i'd like to see in Mission
1. Mario Pena
2. Lupe Rodriguez
3. David Evans
Vets
1. TommyLee- Why he applied for both schools and not just MHS is a slap to his current players. IMO
2.Gilpen

Maximus, I don't want to come across as making any asumption that the kids should have a say in the next coach, just that whomever comes in for either school should be a TEAM friendly coach and have a like-ability when it comes to coaching. By no means am I saying he can't hoot and holler at his team, but too much talent has gone to waste on kids that can't get along with coaches. I am all for the betterment of both Eagles and Patriots football programs! MISSION needs to be on top again.

I think either school would benefit if Coach Gilpin were to be hired as head coach. I have known him since he first moved to Mission a very long time ago. He is not only a great motivator, and coach for the kids, he is also a good English teacher. Because the students liked him so much at MHS when he taught there, there were older teachers who did not understand his teaching methods, and said, as many henny pennys do today, that the students had good grades because he gave them to the students. I know this is not true.
He and I have very similar teaching styles, and students like being in our classes...we have no discipline problems, and the students know we have their best interests at heart. He will make an excellent head coach, and should have been given a chance at MHS long ago.
On another note though, I don't think that the "bored" even cares what happens at MHS. ONe can look at how the city was divided and tell that. Anyone with any common sense can say the division is not right. we have more students in the lower income bracket by a long shot, have more than 400 students than vets, and yet we keep getting compared by it. Some have even said that is why Tom was let go...he made the mistake of beating the Board's team. I know I will get comments on that, but MANY people have that perception.
The district has no money, but people raise thousands for a scoreboard, but our swim teams go without a pool for 6 weeks, with district tomorrow and no place to practice. They have to pay McAllen so they can use their pools. Veterans has swim team members who could go all the way to state, but without a pool to practice in, it becomes quite difficult. The other minor sports are facing the same issues as well. I wish the community could hear about everything and not just FOOTBALL.
Don't get me wrong, as my name says, I am an eagle for life, and go to each and every home game, but all teams and sports are Eagles. I hope whoever we get as HC, is as good a Coordinator as Tom was. He helped out everyone when he could if he was asked.

I do not know much abiut Mario Pena, but I have also heard of the "baggage" that comes with him. I do know a little more about Leonel casas and I cannot even begin to think about my sons having to play for him. I see where some people say he has a disciplined style. I would call it something a little different. his treatment of players and coaches alike leave much to be desired. I know that he has friends here that are invlved in this selections but hopefully there are enough people that know about him to keep that hiring from happening at either school. BIG MISTAKE if that were to happen. If it happens, I hope he is at Mission High, but I am assuming there are enough interested people to voice their opinions on him that the board will think twice before bringing back someone who left for greener pastures.
Eagle Maximus and eagleprophet, I understand you are Eagle fans so it stand to reason most of your interest is at that position. It is nice to see tha you are involved enough to agree with me that Coach Gilpin is most definitely the right person for the Vets job though. I don't see how anyone can think that with 1 playoff tripm in 7 seasons at vets that things can't get better with someone who the kids will fight tooth and nail for. You have to be given a chance sometime and with no where to go but up, a young enthusiastic coach is just what the doctor ordered for that school.
Again I say that I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments and thoughts and I just hope that the right man is chosen for both jobs. However I can tell you without any doubt whatsoever, and this is from a parent taht we all want what is best for our own children no one can possible disagree with that statement, that Coach Gilpin WILL provide that for the athletes at Vets.

Let's talk about Vets in the other thread. It's not getting any attention at all. I feel that the Vets fans are lukewarm fans and only come out when it is against Mission. That is one thing that has really bothered me about the community eeast of Conway. I live east of Conway and Work east of conway, but there just appears to be too much apathy from that fan base. And that could be fixed up with starting a winning tradition of its own.
So I'm off to the Vets thread. Join me there my friend.

I would like to see Pena come to Mission and bring in a good OC with him that likes to air out the ball and can also incorporate the run in there as well. To win up in the third round you need to have a potent passing attack along with skilled runners to keep the defense guarding everything. If you can pass with ease, the game becomes alot easier cuz the run then becomes like a surprise option. From what I've observed Pena had Bassett at SB and they threw the ball quite a bit. He could bring him back or get Lupe Rodriguez as the OC to try to emulate the run and shoot offense of the 80s and 90s Mission had so much success with.
As far as his Character, I don't know him personally, but do note that wherever he's gone, he's helped programs get better, especially defensively. And defensively is where the RGV teams need to really step it up to become more able to compete upstate as well.

If Board member attendance at FB games and other athletic events is what ur referring to, then yes, the Board leans more to the East and Vets. I saw just like one or maybe two at Eagle games. But anywhere from 4-6 of them at the Vets games on a consistent basis.

I feel you need to be balanced ideally at 50/50, but in Mission we all know people don't want to see the run too much. So in Mission it would have to be 60-40 or 70-30 run to pass ratio. We've had years when we can't pass, but not necessarily because it was a bad Qb, but because the routes were slmost always predictable eventhough there was speed to burn.
Lupe as OC if he doesn't get the interview for HC.

01-30-2009, 03:36 PM
What makes you think Lupe is the answer? What has he done? When he ran the spread at PSJA North he had the worst offense in the district. I think it was less than 125 yds a game. You didnt answer two questions how many yards per game and points. Also does the system fit the kids or do the kids fit the system. Also wasnt he here before and why did he leave? Mission does have some speed but blazing no way. In track they have no one in the sprints that consistently places in the top three. (100, 200 and 4 by 1). To have a good offense one must also have a great defense. Something we dont have. When Rusty won it was the defense with Coach Wagner, with coach Detmer it was the defense, ( 3 and out). How many times did this happen last year. You want Mission to go pass happy no matter what, I just want them to win, any possible way whether it be it running or passing or both.

From what was told to me is that they are going to interview like 10 or so coaches and they are going to be interviewed by the two committees simultaneously and they get to pick their coach from the pack. Then those that applied for the sole schools will get a chance to be interviewed by that school's committee only to see if he is the one they want.
Question is which school gets to pick their coach first and what if both schools have the same guy ranked #1 by the repsective committees. What happens then. ARe they gonna flip a coin to see who gets first dibs. This could get really ugly if that were the case.

A lot of people are suggesting that Mission hire Mario Pena and get Lupe Rodriguez as his offensive Coordinator. That has been the idea of several of the closest Eagle supporters were contemplating and suggesting this tandem and give it a go.

So what if its what everyone was saying early on? Compadreville, Texas? Then Mario Pena (Cheney) and Leonel Casas (Bush) would be "given" the job. I'd still be somewhat happy because if thats the case I'd take Pena any day over Casas just on scheme alone. Pena's defense automatically pounds the simply figured offense of Casas. Mission High wins! The rest of the schedule I don't know what would happen guess it would depend on what he decides to do offensively.
