View Full Version : Mission CISD Coaching Scoop/Talk!!

Alright fellas. This is what I've been hearing from the peeps that I ran into throughout the day. Again, this is just scoop I've gathered, not etched in stone.
At Vets they have supposedly dwindled their list to 3 guys. Gilpin, Gaston, and another from Upstate supposedly are the frontrunners. Been told that Pena and Casas are virtually out at Vets. Also been told that Gnatt from Harlingen is still a possibility. But as you all have read in this forum, the sentimental favorite is David Gilpin and I will not be surprised if he actually lands the job. If Gilpin were to land the job at Vets, I would somehow try to get Gnatt to agree to be the OC, but that is technically a step down for him from Valley 5A powerhouse Harlingen.
At Mission, Mario Pena is still one of the names that is being mentioned by many and many have felt that he deserves a shot at perhaps closing out his career at home within walking distance from his house. Another frontrunner being mentioned as perhaps the leading candidate is Dinkelman. He is currently the offensive coordinator under his father in law Sonny Detmer at 3A Somerset. Word with this guy is he has a Freshman son who is supposedly better than Koy and Ty Detmer were at the ninth grade level. The boy is about 6 feet tall. But I say, don't hire the guy cuz of his son, hire the guy because of his credentials and ability to motivate the troops for war.
And that is where I come in to give my opinion once again. I say Hire Mario Pena and strengthen your defense bigtime with the addition of his brother Roy Pena and then bring in Lupe Rodriguez to pilot the offense as the offensive coordinator. Keep Pherson and Jones for sure and then take a look at the rest of the staff to see who is still a desirable coach. I tell you this much, you will definitely have a very strong and disciplined staff if you go this route.
But again, that is based soley on heresay and scoop so I cannot for sure say that is what will transpire at either school.
Also heard that Coach Tom Lee was interviewed for the positions as well. I wouldn't mind having Lee Coach the DBs back at MHS for that was his position in HS and even in College.
So you guys are welcome to give your 2 cents and voice/repeat what you have heard in the Mission CISD coaching rumor mill!!

again...only reason Pena's defenses were so "strong" is cuz all his best athletes were on defense.
he wont have that luxury at Mission. And if he does the offense will fail.

Gantt would not be the OC at Vets. Its a step down, there's nothing technical about it. Mission would be wise to make him the HC.
Gilpin sounds like a GREAT pick for Vets. Best of luck!

Haven't you heard hoopsvillian- Mission CISD has no money. The coaches would be paid on a salary scale 4 not 5 like other districts. More than likely as profit mentioned - work with staff already there.

In case you haven't been told, Pena has gone with OC's who know how to throw the ball lately. He's learned that you cannot do much in the post season with a 3 YARDS AND A CLOUD OF DUST metality.
And the athletes, they have them at Mission. Trust me they do!! 200+ players will get you enough of an assortment to find some good ones.

For all of you that are supporting Gilpin you obviously do not know him. Leadership is not about friendship. How do you expect a man to run a program when he himself can not follow policy or procedure. Some leader that would be.

Ouch!!:doh::doh::doh::doh:
What's that supposed to mean??? See that's why I asked what I asked earlier because people make comments and they have underlying meanings that most or people like me are not aware of. But don't you think that being in Charge of the actual and entire football program at the respective school would make him wanna prove himself and his goodness to the world?
Same thing at Mission. Some mention what happened many years ago with Pena while at LJ, but I say that is so long ago and I tell you the man will want nothing more than to be a class act that would work really hard to bring the Eagles program back to it's normal prominence of the past.
C'mon all eyes are gonna be on these guys and you bet they're gonna be extra careful to fulfill their duties in the most appropriate fashion/manner. IMO!!

Gaston was at SA Holmes. Last 2 years were not so hot, before that I dn't know. SA Holmes has not want since the guy at Laredo United left from Holmes to United. I forget his name, but he won at Nixon, Holmes, and United. Used to be a Run and Shoot guy. I think he learned from Casas at Mercedes where he was an assistant way back. I may be mistaken though...Things do go full circle though. The Laredo United coach is David Sanchez....proven winner he is.

HATE RUNS DEEP IN THE BLOOD HUH! "supporting" not befriended or friends with. Created the profile to just talk isshhhhh! Just figure he'd have the attention of the kids since he is so intense and has been in the Mission city high school athletic scene for nearly 20 years. (not junior high). Just saying. There are other candidates who "deserve" to be looked at too.

The Board members will approve or not approve the recommended guys from the administration and their committees.
We'll see what happens. I'm sure you're ircking to get back to work with your new pilot in place.
Hope that any and all decisions are not based on favors, but on the best guy available being selected for the posts.

From what I hear Gaston is a good guy if you want to run all night- play selection is lacking, boring offense, we need some excitement in this town- put Gilpin at Vets and let's get a tradition started- he can make a difference because he is all about the kids- he could care less about who thinks what of him he wants to lead the kids to success and he is capable of dong it-

The committees will make a recommendation to the administration(superintendent) and then he turns around, interviews the persons recommended and takes the names the committee recommends to the board meeting for their approval. It's a pretty complicated process which can take some unexpected turns and such, but normally the board approves the recommendations made to them by the administration.
So by Wednesday night, we should have our coaches. Or at least, I hope so.

Mercedes, Mission High and Mission Veterans in line to fill vacancies

All three expected to be filled by Tuesday night

RGVSports.com
The appearance of District 32-4A will become a lot clearer in the next two days.
The three remaining coaching vacancies will be filled starting Monday night. The first opening will be filled Monday night at a meeting of the Mercedes ISD school board, when Mercedes is expected to hire the successor to Gilbert Leal, who left to become the coach at Harlingen South. Then on Tuesday, Mission High and Mission Veterans Memorial are expected to fill their posts, which were vacated in December when Tom Lee, then Mission High coach, and Carlos Longoria, then Mission Veterans coach, were let go.
Keep checking back to RGVSports.com Monday and Tuesday night to find out who will coach the three programs next.

What do you mean by tableing?
Tabling the proposition means that you put off the recommendation to take a closer look at the scenarios or situations that could perhaps benefit the kids/district more or better.
Why would they table the recommendations? What is there to discuss? What do you know E4L?? Fill us in!!

Tabling--- in other words they will postpone the hiring and go through the process deeper or even re-post the position.
Rumors are floating around that HR blew it. There are guys that were eliminated and not interviewed when they should have been. I wont say who... but it could end up to some grievences being filed if they hire someone.
I still think it will be Gilpin at Vets and Dinklemann at MHS
There is one issue a lot of people aren't talking about....There is supposedly a hiring freeze at these schools...meaning will these new coaches be allowed to bring in the staffs that they want? Someone even mentioned the notion that they might have to keep all the coaches still in place..

It'll probably be Gilpin at Vets and Dinkelmann at MHS. Let's not table anything here. Do this and get it outta the way. The kids cannot be left hanging like that for another 2 or 3 weeks. That'll be an injustice to the Eagle Players and their program.

Sonny has spent two years on what is his fourth stint in Somerset
his team went 2-8 in 2007
and the 7-4 mark was this year.
The kids name is Steven Dorman - no reason given for the different last name, but he is Johan's son and Sonny's grandson.
This year.. as a sophomore he was 173-302 for 2492 yards 57.28 Comp %
he had 23 TD and 14 INT
Here is a nice little article on the kid...

JD thought they were yanking his chain. Interviewing coaches were told are you OK if we do not let you bring in coaches and work with th staff that is in place. This would be hard for an incoming coach, who has a son as a college prospect. New system to teach all by himself would be to tough, all while relocating and getting to know the kids. Too much too ask and Dink just didn't like the feel of it so he said no thanks. Hiring freeze is because bond didn't pass..People were told not to place bond with Nov. elections too many people voting and good chance it was not going to pass and bingo.....so now many districts are freezing employment. As a HC, You could always tell a coach on stafff he will not have a job to make space for new coaches, but if he doesn't leave his teaching assg., your screwed. And as a HC this hand has to be played very carefully and Dink said the heck with it. Which leaves Vets with the same dilema...you will have coaches who might not get along because of viscious things said on this board...To be a fly on the wall at Vets at some meetings is what I am asking for Christmas

As far as the boys are concerned, they practice, many have gone over to track but ALL of them want SERIOUS change. they don't necessarily mean in personnel, but in plays, philosophy, etc.
Everyone in town seems to be really upset about how the committees were chosen, especially for MHS. Also, at Vets, the leaking of infomation has been awful. Integrity does not seem to be an attribute for some of those committee members. Que triste.

Mario Pena at MHS
He wasn't my first choice...but my top choices weren't even interviewed...
If you were gonna go with a Veteran guy...which I guess is what the board wanted for the MHS job...Pena was the best fit...he lives in Mission...he was an Eagle..and there is no question his teams are tough... He just may the disciplinarian that program needed as well.
I have always enjoyed working with Mario Pena...he gives great sound when we interview him...and his teams are usually fun to cover.
Biggest question... is he committed to throwing the ball? Frankly, he is a coach that coaches to what he has.. and right now he has the district's top returning quarterback...Mission will throw the football... don't worry... lets just hope they have some receivers ready to develop.
Congrats to Coach Pena...
As for David Gilpin.
I am glad to see that David is getting his first shot. Veterans is the school that they are allowing a first year guy and honestly he is a great motivator and has been an Asst under Dicus, Detmer, Cavazos, and has been at Vets all 7 years.
They are rolling the dice on David... but they are doing it with an alum who has bled Maroon and White and Blue, Red and Silver
Congrats to Coach Gilpin.

Are they gonna be allowed to bring in their own oc/dc or do they have to employ from last years staff. Rumor has it- no teaching slot availability - can't come over. How true is this?

thats true in alot of cases you have to look at teaching slots avability and if district allows the coach/teacher to leave there school while school is in progress

:agree:
Congratulations to coach Gilpin. I hope Pena will work hard for all sports as coordinator. Because he was an athletic director I think and have heard he will.
I still think the board is crooked in many ways, but this time it looks like what is best for our town has happened.
Now we just need to give the guys room to build their programs.

OC should be Lupe Rodirguez, Im sure they will find room for him he is a legend in mission. Bring him back and He can finally have a QB that is coachable and willing to learn. I know if I was a player and I knew his past as a Player, I would take every word he says to heart and get better. He would have a great kid in Gilbert who was newcomer of the year. He didnt have that at valley view! To me it was the purgatory of football, no disrespect. LUPE needs his chance to develop a QB!
He can rap too!!!!
