no charters this weekend. i'm going to be at the island w/ the wife at a conference called "A weekend to remember."

Oh yeah.... it will be memorable. :D

next official trip is set for Wednesday of next week.

i was planning to take my wife fishing in the morning before the conference begins, but not sure what the weather is going to be like. i'm gonna have to look at the weather forecast this evening.

on another note, i finally unpdated my website w/ the reports. now comes the difficult part- the photos.

hey guys i was going through my fishing rods and i came upon the fisshing rod rawr and my wife game me for fathers day. it was my dads fishing rod and now that he passed on i really love it. it is an abu garcia baught in 1975 the year i was born. man that reel is 33 years old and still working. just thought i should bring this up.

hey guys just got back from bowfishing today was a great day we got 13 gar and 1 tilapia. biggest gar was 6'9 and weighed 225 lbs. the second biggest was 5'11 and we didn't weigh it. after we got home we made some crunchy and tasty chicharones!!!!

What a day..... I took two guys out of harlingen and was really pumped about todays trip because of the almost nonexistent wind. I just love glassy conditions out on the bay. :)

This was one of those days where you have high hopes and then it all comes crumbling down. I was hoping to catch some tailing action early on, but the water was just too darn high for it to be really good. As I headed out into the bay out of the mouth of the arroyo, I wasn't really sure what to do. I had been catching a lot of fish north of the mouth, but wanted to check things out south. So south I went. As soon as I crossed over the ICW and onto the flat, I began to see reds being pushed right and left for several miles. I didn't want to stop even though there were a lot of fish. I had decided to keep moving and see where the fish stopped. It never happened. I found fish all over the east of the bay.

I finally decided to hump some small schools of reds just east of the Duncan house. We hit 4-5 small schools and NADA. Perfect casts on those fish resulted in the fish just turning away. I kept on going and finally decided to pole the guys around a bit in an area just loaded with fish. Would you believe I couldn't get close to any of them! As I poled, fish were being pushed ahead, but too darn far to get a good cast on them and at times it seemed like the fish just plain dissappeared. Deciding to move, I got fustrated as soon as I turned the engine on, the fish would magically appear. Really frustrating.

I changed game plan since the first couple of hours yielded zero fish. Sad but true. I made the call to head on over the north side lagoon where I mentioned earlier fish had been thick. Sure enough, as i move in there, I could see wakes being pushed immediately. Now I'm pumped back up again. I pole the guys again and pick up one red a couple of minutes into it. Thought it could be the start of a good day right....wrong. Same problem as early on. The fish were being veeeery finicky and didn't want to eat any of the lures were threw at them.

i moved again and again and again. By now it's 11:30 am and still only one fish in the box and one small red released. i'm getting irritated at this point. I finally end up back on the east side of the Duncan house (yes, I traveled quite a bit). We stared hitting small schools of reds again, but this time most of them were hungry. We caught 10 reds in relatively short time, the biggest of which was just a hair under 29". On one of those passes, we came across a HUGE herd of reds, but not a one came out it!

We called it a day at around 1:00pm having caught 12 reds. Tough day of fishing, but it turned out ok.

Ewww i forgot mention i went fishing saturday night!
We caught an amazing amount of Mangrove Snapper! I know its gonna be hard to believe but we went home with 2 gaftops, 2 whiting, a sand trout, and 65 Mangrove Snapper! It was just three of us so you could just imagine how much fun it was...:)
They werent huge but good enough to get a nice size fillet from each one....yummy!

Under the causeway close to the channel....They are always killer in the fall.
You could pretty much catch them whereever there is some kind of structure.

funny you metioned that chillywilly. I went to spi saturday late afternoon to show my boat to a guy who eventually decided to buy it and I saw a bunch of cars at the end of the causeway. It's a great area for all kinds of fish.

hey free line a mullet and you might be able to catch a king or even a tarpon....tarpon have been rolling a lot lately you can even through a mirror lure on a shimano 4000 and have a tarpon get hooked...not to mention all the sand trout that have been biting...:D

my wife and I caught 17 whiting sunday morning over by the jetties. the day started off very calm and by noon we had high winds pick up to about 40 mph. Overall all i had a great weekend.

Redfish, I dont know much about fly fishing but i think its safe to assume that high winds are a pretty bad thing....

yep, high winds and clouds are a terrible combination for flyfishermen. when this happens, we are left with having to pole skinny water for tails or groups of fish.

i will give details later, but here's a short versionl. Took 2 guys from Colorado for their first trip onto the LLM. Hit 3 venues and caught fish at each. over 25 reds caught w/ a few over sized ones and 10 trout. good day of fishing! Oh I forgot to mention, they decided to spin fish since winds were terrible and they didn't want to mess w/ the flyrod. :)

Yeah, them Reds love those gold spoons,..both in the surf and in the bay especially. Last time I went fishing was for that Boca Chica fishing tourny. Ended up in 3rd place...pretty fair outing. Well, the weekend before that "we" all caught our limit...21 Redfish in a about 2 hours on the surf right after gettin out of work! :eek: True story. We had our limit before sunset..I got out of work at 5 and by 7 we were on our way back to town. I guess we caught all of em' due to the all the pressure of the hurricane...seemed to be pushing them more in closer to land. :hmmm: Got the pictures to prove it. ;)

I caught them over at Boca Chica Beach. There's only one access. Anywho, I scouted out the beach way before the tournament started. I drove and fished throughout the whole beach just to find a good spot to fish. Sure enough, I hit the jackpot. The weekend before the tournament we caught 21Reds in about an hour & a half. We camped out starting on Friday and stayed there til' Sunday, which was the day the tournament started, just to get that spot. Sure enough, we fished Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of course which was the day of the tournament. Anyway, point being, those 3 days (fri, sat, & sun) we caught...I'd say....about...30+ Reds. 4 nice Specks, and 2 Snook in that spot that we had. All keepers!! It was quite a few of us there, let's just say we limited out each day we were there. We had to send ppl home to take back the fish so that the next day we fished the game warden wouldn't think we were doing anything illegal..and we weren't. Some douchebag complained to the game warden and told him that we were "cheating". Sure enough, this a-hole stops by our camp and starts searching everything, telling me to be a man and tell him where we were hiding the "stringer" and whatnot..a straight out a-hole to the max. Well, I told him to sit back in his nice little 4 wheeler, watch us catch the fish and told him to eat some popcorn. haha! Well, I dont blame the guy b/c at the rate that we were catching them it was ridiculous. We didn't cheat at all, and well the scouting paid off. I was in 1st throughout the day but then got bumped down to 3rd. It's okay, I dont care if I didn't place or anything...we still made a massacre on them Redfish!! Best fishing days that I will never forget. :)

We weren't having that much luck with cut bait. I used pure artificials. I had to go back into town twice, they were tearin' up the lures I was using...haha. When I went back to town the 2nd time Walmart had run out of the lures I was using!! :doh: So I had to call a quick "audible" and decided that the chartreuse color was the color of choice at that time and switched over to a similar type of lure. Well, it worked...the presentation had to be slow...they picked it up (lure) right off the bottom.

Well, fishing is tricky..you have to understand where you're goin' and what you're gonna use. But before you choose a lure color you have to look at the color of the water you're gonna be fishing...green, murky, clear, etc. Also, the water depth has alot to do with it..gold spoons work good in both murky or clear water..I like to use silver spoons in clear water..it all varies significantly. (Ex. if the water is deep then you might wanna switch to something with a bit heavier jig head to get to the bottom, if the water is shallow (bay) pick a light jig head and make sure it doesn't touch the bottom since you'll be pickin' up all the grass on the bottom or you can also use a popping cork to keep it from getting snagged on the bottom; there's topwater lures too. You can also use weedless spoons, those are awesome for the bay and the Reds love em'. Cut bait is also good...cut mullet especially or live finger-sized mullet..fish love em'. I've learned alot of fishing techniques throughout the years but there is tons of new information that I still need to learn about. There is always room for improvement :)
