A couple of years ago, I chartered two men from the McAllen area on a flyfishing deal. One of guys took the photo I now us for my business cards and the avatar you see next to my screen name. I promised him a free charter for the rights to the photograph.

I had really high hopes for today's trip cuz we thought the forcast called for calm winds early on. As we left the dock around 6:20 am, a 10mph brisk northerly wind greeted us with a mild bite to it. I came of plane on a land bar just off the ICW. I've been finding a few pods of reds there early in the morning, but just not today. Stikin' ducks have turned the bar into chocolate.

I moved on and entered a west side lagoon that is usually good for birding action this time of year, but once again....nada, nothing, zilch. No birds were working anywhere, but there were about 3 Trillion ducks on the far west bank. With wind blowing as it was, the eastern edge of that lagoon looked like a great spot. Within minutes of getting on the poling platform, huge tails began to say "hello." The fish would'nt tail for very long, but the guys managed to land two 27" reds, loose one, and break one off. A good start to the morning.

I chose to come back around and take another whirl around the same edge. This time we didn't have as many shots. The guys had about 3 shots at huge reds with none wanting anything to do with their fly.

I moved around a couple more times in the same lagoon with not much success. As I made an attempt to get out of that area, we started pushing a lot of wakes around the middle of the lagoon. I shut down and began to pole and drift the area. A few minutes into it, the first red inhaled a fly. Another fat 27"red. After that the guys kept on sightcasting to many reds, but it seemed like the fish got a case of fear. Both the clients and I were getting irritated as red after red would spook for no apparrent reason. One fish that didn't spook ended up being the catch of the day. One of the guys managed to get 28 1/2" FAT trout to eat. It was a beauty. The guys are sending me a photo of it sinse my camera battery died out there.

From there on out, only one more red was caught. i don't know what was causing this reds to spook so easily. The guys were very happy at the end having had shots at a large amount reds and a few mongo bongo trout.

Now lets see what tomorrow brings.

well the road to holly beach was all jacked up today. did not have a 4x4.:mad: Instead we headed out to the old causeway to do some fishing off the bridge. Ended up with 13 whiting, and 2 speckle trouts. We completely forgot all about the camera.:bang:

man I remember Fishing when I lived in North Texas... The Best Place in Texas to me is Lewisville Lake... I caught so many fishes there. Manly Catfish ummm then my aunt who is a nigreta she fried that fish ummmm so good... I like when black people fry fish... THE BEST!!!

As i get older, i think i'm getting more ornery. I don't mind someone fishing a favorite fishing spot. I've never really considered any one spot as mine. what does burn my britches are guys who cut across me while drifting. So guys out there just dont have a clue about etiquette on the water. :fire:
the other thing that reeeealy gets to me is when guys get to the dock to launch and they begin to back the boat up then stop. they all get out of the vehicle and begin to load roads, ice chests, food, other gear, install plugs, ........... All this while there are 10 other guys waiting to launch as well. All that stuff should be taken care off before you get to the ramp!!!!! :fire:Actual launching of the boat shouldn't take more than a minute unless it's a single person doing it all. In which case it shouldn't take but an extra minute to get the boat off and tied off before getting the vehicle and trailer out of the water.

did you mean Jigged for flounder or Gigged for flounder? when I fish for flounder, I usually do use jigs. A variety of different kinds.

you know chief, I have no problem with the forward/reverse issue. We all have to learn sometime. I kind of get a kick out of that. In fact, I still jab my brother about that whenever he goes out with me. i usually tell him to back the boat up, but he doesn't like to do it if there are more than one or two guys waiting to put in. He gets nervous. ;)

by real beef is with these yahoos who can clearly see that all the other guys are loading their boats up and getting ready to launch as soon as it's their turn. these guys still stay in their vehs and then block the ramp while they decided to finally load up aaaaaand then take their sweet time about it!!!!:bang:

I'm no expert but I think gigging is more like hunting than fishing. You actually like use a light to see the fish, then stab it with some type of harpoon thing. I know some guys that do it...sometimes.

somehow i think that is video has been doctored. I see no possible way to grab hold of a huge marlin while diving into the water. the fact two seperate camera shots are taken when the guy jumps in and has a hold of it just confirms it. NOT POSSIBLE.

You asked about reports..... i wish I had some. I have not been on the water for what seems like an eternity. I've been getting my boat ready for the guy who bought it and it's taken me a while. In addition to that, I haven't had any charters the last few weeks. :( I really don't mind. I needed the break. i have had to cancel a few at the end of December because i'm just not sure when I will get the new boat. I deliver my current boat to the new owner this upcoming weekend.

I still have several charters pending, but nothing has materialized yet and I hope they don't call until i know for certain my new rig will be in.

I think I will be out there on Thursday weather permitting. My buddy who has an Ibis wants to head out.

My new boat should have been here by now, but the engine turned out to be a lemon on the test run. :( Maybe I'll get the call this week or next week.

i was planning to go tomorrow, but its not going to happen. I will most likely go out on Friday. I deliver my boat to the new owners on Saturday and they want to go out for an afternoon charter. They haven't confirmed yet. i'm also the lodge I work with has me down to charter next weekend, but I don't think I will have my boat yet.:cry: There goes $1,000 down the drain. :cry:

warm days between cold fronts are always good fishing days. as more fronts come and drops the temp down, fishing will get a little tougher but fish will still eat.

yes the fish will bite in this weather. i think they are more hungry when it is cold, i dont know, that is just always in my head.

well.... not really. When it's really warm like in July, they tend to sometimes get lock jaw and not want to eat. When it's really cold, they just get a little lethargic and will not be as aggressive, but will eat of presented with a tasty morsal. so in otherwords, think about the 3 little bears, not too hot, not too cold, but just right!. :D

Wont work. I wouldn't want to get busted on the 3rd day with 3 daily bag limits of a bunch of different fish caught over 3 days. :D


on a side note, this just came to me as i wrote the note above.

For those of you who night fish, there has always been a missunderstanding regarding the 2 day daily possesion limit. Let me try to clarify it so you will not get busted and have to pay a huge fine.

If you happen to go night fish with a couple of buddies and have a limit (9 reds) by midnight. You continue fishing and catch a nother 6 reds by 2:00AM and then head back in.

Question: If the Game Warden is at the dock or on the water and inspects your catch.

A. Will he give you a fine for having 6 reds above you daily bag limit.

B. will tell you "Nice haul. Have a good morning."

C. Make you go back out till 6:00 am stating that sunrise is the determining factor to allow 2 bag limits while night fising.

D. you thought you would be smart and separate the first 9 reds in a different icechest and the other 6 in another one so the warden could see which ones you caught before midnight and which ones were caught after. After inspecting your catch, he tells you "Good job gentlemen. Go get some shut eye."
