Just got back from a trip with a couple of good friends. State Farm agent in Edinburg Robert Elizalde and former Head Coach aond AD from Mercedes Hector Martinez joined me on the water today. i was a little giddy as we moved onto the flats this morning. Coulds were nonexistent and winds were very low. Within the first few minutes of fishing, we had landed 3 reds and one had broken off. Fish were abundant in and around the first venue I hit.
Thinking it could be the start of a stelar day, I left the fish I had found for greener pastures. I couldn't find those greener pastures. There were plenty of fish all around, but they just didn't want to eat to much. We would catch a red here and there, but no consistent action.
Before calling it a day, we were thrilled to have seen about 10 trout in excess of 22" and many others around 20". Too bad they weren't eating very well.
The day ended with a total of 11 reds and 3 trout. Overall a tough day, but with decent results.

don't be afraid of taking them on a boat. I've been taking my kids on mine since before they could walk. I previously had a 16 ft scooter with no sides and everyone would always say "aren't you afraid the kids will fall over?"
Quite frankly, no. If they fall in, just pick them up. they have to wear life jackets so there really is not much of a threat. Additionally, most of the time i'm fishing 1- 1.5 feet of water. They can easily stand up in that.
My new Curlew is a lot wider than my previous boat and a lot more stable in choppy conditions. I have absolutely no fear of taking them on this one.
ideas..... here's something fun, but not meant to catch fish to eat. Take them to any fishing dock/pier where fish are cleaned on a regular basis. Catfish will usually be around the cleaning stations. Get a rod and reel with any kind of bait (shrimp, squid, shiner, mullet, even guts from fish. Within seconds the kids will be enjoying a good fight.
Another idea, but this one involves a boat. Take them to under the causeway and along any piling structure. mangrove snappper should be easy to pick off there.
Good luck

I got skunked yesterday in the surf.
I was using live mullet and dead shrimp. In total, I fished about five different spots and had zero success. I talked to a few locals and winter Texans who reported the same kind of day. I saw plenty of reds in the first gut and I think next time I will bring my spoons.
On a side note, I happenned to see that Mexican National who drowned last week on the beach. Not a pretty site, my prayers go out to his family.

What a day on the water with Ibleed and his wife. He mentioned he arrived at the dock at 6:50. He lied! he didn't show up til 7:01. I told to arrive at 7:00 so he was a little late. Who knows what kind of action we missed because of his tardiness? :( :D
Exiting th mouth of the arroyo, I made my way south headed to an east side venue where schooling redfish, singles, doubles, and triples have have been cruising for a while. I came off plane just east of Capt. Susie Weldon and Capt. Jaime Lopez. They also have been fishing these same fish the last few days. We begin to fish and can see some schools in the area and directly infront of our drift a couple hundred hards away. About the time I tell my clients to look ahead to spot a school, a clueless boater/fisherman comes hauling from the north headed south. I can see him coming directly toward us and begin to wonder if he's going to turn slightly east and go around us. NOT A CHANCE. This guy goes directly between my boat and Capt. Susie's boat. The distance between out two boats? About 100 yards! I could have cast and and hit that guy who cut across my drift. Boy was I livid!!!
I know most of the guys around here have great boat etiquette, but for the benefit of those who are new to boating and shallow water fising, PLEASE make every effort possible not to cut another fisherman's drift. All you have to do is check the wind and you can easily know what direction a guy is drifting.
Afte this incident, I decided to pole a little northeast to see if possibly some of the fish in that direction had not been too spooked, but I could not spot any fish. I decided to go aorund Capt. Jaime is start and other drift on his west side. The 2nd cast one of the clients made resulted in the first fish of the day. A decent 22" red. A few minutes later he landed a 17" trout. Another good start, but that was it for that area. Not another fish for the next 20 minutes. The other two capt.'s fled the area telling me the can not caught many fish either.
I made my way over a glassy flat headed north. I saw a few fish grouped together, but not many. I made an attempt to hump a couple of schools before I continued my way to my north venue. One fish took the lure out of the 3 groups I fish we swung lures to. While there were more to hit, those fish were in small groups of 3-5 fishing making humping them a little more difficult since they tend to spook a little easier compared to the large schools of redfish.
We finally got to our next venue where the trout bite yesterday was simply outstanding. Today was no different. For the next couple of hours, we were on fish. Ibleeds wife caught her first 26" redfish all on her own. Her arm began to hurt from the fight and wnated to give up. We didn't let her. LOL. It was fun watching her fight and land that fish. The look on her face was priceless. The trout landed were not as big as yesterday's, but we still Before moving on late in the morning, we had landed close to 20 trout and 5 reds. With limits of trouts taken and needing only one more redfish.
I wanted to have Ibleed sight cast to the final red needed for their limits. So off the East side sand flats I go. I spotted an occastional red but not many. We made about a 15 minute drift on the sand and never came across a fish. We moved again headed back south and never really saw enough fish to be confident at a chance to see one. We ended up back where had started the day and finished the day with the final red fish a few minutes later. We headed back into the dock at around 12:45. Total fish caught including a few rat reds about 20 trout and 10 reds.
Don't have time to post some of the pics right now, but will soon.
Had a fun day with Ibleed and his wife. Looking forward to his wife using her monthly mileage check for our monthly charter she spoke about. :hide:

Friday morning I was waiting at the dock for the Superintendent of Lyford ISD, his son, the Head Coach/AD from Lyford. When only the Super (Ed Infante) and his son (Tom) got out of the vehicle, I knew something came up for the Coach. Sure enough, his son had fallen ill the night before and was forced to play nurse for him.
We quickly made our way onto the flats. Eventhough I have been finding lots of herds and trout south of the mouth of the Arroyo, I was curious to find out if the shrimp hatch had occurred yet over on the west side. I made my way there only to find no birding action, but A LOT of a green type of algae or grasslike algae the middle of the venue. There was some clear water and some signs of fish so we began to fish.
After a few casts, Mr. Infante hooks up and I quickly saw the fish was a nice flounder. I was pleasantly with that kind of a start. Soon after we began to land big trout. Out of all the trout caught over half were over 20". Redfish were a little elusive in the are, but we did manage land 3 nice 25-26" redfish. Tom hooked up to one of those 26" fish and had a time of his life fighting his first big red. We left that area after landing about 16 trout and 3 reds. I went back to the area holding lots of reds, but nothing came of it. We called it a day around 12:30 with a total of 17 Trout 3 reds, and 1 flounder.

You want a shot at an upper 20 or 30" trout, then you need to be willing to do some work. This involves getting off the boat and working an area really good with a top water lure. when going after a big trout, you need to change your mindset from a "meat haul" kind of a day to a "trophy fish" mentality. :pop: And by the way... I'm not a croaker soaker so forget about fishing with live bait for that elusive big trout. :pop:

My Dad left the park by 9:00 am to work on the cabin all weekend. I was not able to make it until after work I was on the water by 7:00 pm. Stopped at cabin to unload supplies and ended up staying there to help all night. We brought in trout all night under the lights and I brought in a 42" Black Drum beat my record by 2"
My cousins headed out towards Green Island after dropping me off and didnt fair well at all.
I had to leave Saturday Afternoon but my dad and the electricians stayed another night. Not sure how it went for them.
We were able to re do all the electrical at the cabin. Its ready for a great get together! Anyone intrested? :)

You should of stopped by. I was up by 7:30 fishing the sides and back of the cabin. It was my Dad and I and two electricians. I couldnt take our boat out in the morning because I was the only one up and we were having steering problems. It would've been to tough for me to go out on my own with out someone in back helping the motor to turn.
Something happend to that gear box under the steering column. It was slipping and not turning the motor or pulling the cable. Especially bad when up at fast speeds.
When they dropped me off at the Stripes in the morning they headed to the boat shop across the street and found the part for $280. After that they ran to the hardware store to pick up other needed items.

no they are not really expensive they run 30-40 bucks. worried about stingrays...well....yes, but i don't fish waist deep water. while our chances would increase in this kind of water, but it's a risk reward thing in my mind. i'd rather fish 1-1 1/2 feet of water. you should be able to see where you are stepping and avoid any stingers. :hi:

Today I chartered Jesse and Betsy Garcia from Mcallen. They met me at the dock bright, early, and eager to catch some fish. They boarded the Curlew and as I was about to hit the throttle, I noticed no water was coming out of my engine....not good. I immediately check my water pressure and it was very good and the engine is not overheating. I know therefore something must be stuck in the line. As hard as I tried to get it unplugged, nothing worked. I usually carry a piece of weedeater line in my boat for just such an occasion, but it was nowhere to be found. I ran the thickest mono I had through the valve......only a trickle of water started coming out. What to do? What to do? I risked it and headed out and prayed i didn't make stupid decision.
As soon I think I have the bay figured out, I'm brought back down to reality. The last couple of trips have been outstanding and I had no reason to believe today would be no different. I didn't count on the wind being as fierce as it was. The area I've been catching a lot of trout looked like chocolate this morning. I tried an area just north of it in a little clearer water, but there was nothing there.
Time to move on. Back South I go. I tried several venues on the south side with little success. One trout and red were landed east of the Duncan house by Betsy. Many of the areas were void of fish and were blown out. I headed toward the northern most drumboat and one more fish came in. I went back just east of the Duncan house. Two more reds came in.
It's not about 1:00 and we only have 4 reds and 1 trout. The half day charter was up, but i extended it bit because of the time I spent messing with the motor. I moved over the West side as a last ditch effort. We made a couple of drifts and caught 1 more red, a rat red, a couple of small trout and a beautiful 23" momma trout caught by Jesse.
I called it a day at 2:00 with only 5 reds and 2 trout in the icechest and a very sore arm from all the casting. I really hate blind casting.....

Stepping out my garage this morning got me a little confused. I could barely feel a whisp of air, but I know that would not last. I picked up Bill at the Kingfisher a few minutes before 7:00 am and we docked off the county park.
Bill had been fishing with Capt. Scott Sparrow the last couple of days with uncooperative weather. Capt. Scott was able to find a few pods with gulls working them, but only 2 fish had been the net result. Both days were cut short.
I was really hoping for better results today, but I wasn't too confident. I went went straight to a west side venue where some birding action has been happening. I came off plane after spotting the first group of gulls. I get on the poling platform and make my way to them. I couldn't see the tails of the reds, but I knew they were there by the bird's activity. Right as we got close the birds said good bye and Bill sent the fly towards a wake. Bam!!! One cast, one red on. Bill fought the fish for a while and brought close enough to the boat for me to grabbed hold of the tail to bring in on board. A decent 24" red. Wooohooo!!! It's on Baby!!!!!
Well not really. I was able to get Bill close to about another 6 pods of reds, but we just couldn't get any more hook ups. Around 10:00am the clouds really began to thicken up and the wind slowly did it's thing. About an hour later, I asked Bill what he wanted to do. We couldn't sight cast for fish with the thick cloulds above and at 82 yrs old bill wasn't really up to blind casting with a flyrod. For that matter, I really wasn't up to blind casting with a fly rod.
He asked if we could spin fish a bit so I headed to the area I was finding trout last week. In a 20 minute drift, we landed 1 25" red, 3 trout (15, 18, 22) and I lost one trout in the mid twenties. With this many fish around, I asked Bill again if he would like to blind cast a little with the flyrod and a small popper. He tied one on and made an earnest effort at it, but the wind would just not let us. I was having a hard time holding the boat in place long enough for him to make a few casts. It got old really fast and we decided it to throw in the towel.
I dropped Bill back at the dock of Kingfisher. He thank me for a wonderful day (go figure) and promised to be back this fall for another go at it. He seemed to have really enjoyed the day a lot more than I did. Even when weather doesn't cooperate, I still tend to blame myself for poor days.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission today approved a number of proposed changes to freshwater fishing regulations, including the state’s first measure aimed at protecting alligator gar. The prehistoric-looking predators can live as long as 75 years and are the largest freshwater fishes in Texas.
The statewide regulation on alligator gar will change Sept. 1, 2009, from no length or daily bag limit to a one fish per day bag limit. The bag will apply to both recreational and commercial fishing.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Inland Fisheries Division Director Phil Durocher told commissioners that Texas has the best remaining alligator gar populations in the country.
"We have a window of opportunity to sustain populations by limiting harvest to one alligator gar per day. It’s a good first step toward managing gar into the future," Durocher said.
While research on the fish, which can grow to more than 250 pounds, is still in its early stages in Texas, biologists know that alligator gar are very long-lived animals and take a long time to reach sexual maturity, with females attaining an age of 12 years and a length of about 60 inches before spawning for the first time.
Alligator gars also apparently require very specific spawning conditions, including flooded terrestrial vegetation or seasonally flooded backwaters.
Current research being conducted by fisheries biologists in Texas includes investigations into size structure and year class strength in a mark-recapture study; a seasonal movement and habitat study on radio-tagged fish; and research that looks a the genetics of alligator gar populations as well as contaminants that may be present in the fish.
Public comment on the alligator gar proposal was 167 comments against the department’s recommendation and 233 comments in favor of the regulation, with the majority of concerns raised by bow and commercial fishermen.
Blue Catfish — Lake Lewisville (Denton County), Lake Richland Chambers (Navarro and Freestone Counties), and Lake Waco (McLennan County)
Harvest regulations for blue catfish on these reservoirs currently consist of the statewide limits (12-inch minimum length limit and 25 fish daily bag limit). Changes approved by the commission consist of a 25 fish daily bag limit with a 30 to 45-inch slot length limit, and harvest of only one blue catfish over 45 inches would be allowed. No harvest of blue catfish between 30 and 45 inches will be allowed.
Largemouth Bass — Lake Ray Roberts (Cooke, Denton, and Grayson Counties)
The commission approved changes will make Lake Ray Roberts consistent with the statewide limits for largemouth bass (14-inch minimum length limit and five fish daily bag limit).
Lake Texoma — Cooke and Grayson Counties
Alligator gar -The commission approved a harvest closure in May to protect spawning adults in a portion of the lake that is within the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and a portion of the lake upstream of the U.S. Highway 377 bridge to the Interstate Highway 35 bridge.
Blue and channel catfish — The commission changed harvest regulations for blue channel catfish from a 15 per day bag limit to a 15 per day bag limit of which only one blue catfish 30 inches or greater may be harvested per day.

wind already changed. it's already out of the north. weather doesn't look to bad other than it will be a cool to cold morning. Wind shoud be ok with lots of sun. as long as a certain area is not blown out, it should be a good day.

Took my wife fishing today at the Island. We drove all the way down ocean blvd. At the road block we parked and started the hike towards the bay. Weather was warm, water was cool. Hit the water around 8 and started wading about 1 mile in. Saw alot of activity on the water but couldnt hook up. My wife started freaking out with all the stingrays that were surrounding us and how they blended in on the sand so she headed back in while i continued. She was more freaked out due to the fact that we were barefoot. Around 930 I was able to land 3 reds(16,19,21). I released all the fish. I would have kept the 21 but my wife stayed with the stringer and she was already on land while I was about 1 mile away. The Day was absolutely beautiful and my wife really enjoyed it(just not the stingrays) and had a blast out there on the water. We will definetly be back in a couple of weeks. This time I will have my own stringer. The one thing i did hate was the walk back, my legs were just killing me. Had some lunch on the sand then headed back in around 1230.
I took some pics from my phone, once i upload it i will post them up.

On Saturday I took Twobits, his brother, and his wife's boss out on a half day charter. His wife paid for the charter as a birthday present for him. It just happened to be my birthday also.....and i'm having to work. LOL I guess it could be a worse kind of job.
Around 1:00am, a fierce wind awoke me from my snoring slumber. It was blowing over 30 mph and I knew things would be bad that morning. Upon walking out my door in the morning, it was not blowing as hard and I gave out a huge sigh of relief. The morning temprature was in the low 60's but it felt very nice.
We arrived at the dock at 7:00 and we were quickly underway. The temprature seemed to more brisk than a hour earlier. In fact, it was quite cold and the wind had a bite to it.
My game plan to was head straight to the venue that has been producing big and plenty of trout. My fear was it had been blown out by the northern. As I pulled in there, the water did look a little murky, but not nearly as bad as I expected. I choose to give it a whirl. On our first path, we landed on decent trout and a couple of other dinks. I was kind of surprised and choose to take another go at it.
The second drift brought in a couple of more trout and a decent red. Not great results, however, I knew other areas have been void of fish so I didn't want to leave this area unless I really had to. We made several more passes unitl around noon. By that time we had landed 8 trout and 3 reds along with a few more of both that were undersized.
I gambled by leaving in hopes of finding some more reds. We didn't find any which leaves to wonder if I had made the right call. I cut the day off at 1:30pm for two reasons. 1. The half day charter was already extended a bit 2. The wife sent me text to get my rearend home ASAP. LOL!!!!
We boogied back to the dock, cleaned fish, and flew back home. Twobit was very excited about our trip and has hopes of doing it again.
As I was getting to home, I noticed a bunch of cars parked all around. I knew right away my wife had set up a surprise birthday party for me and had told everyone to be there by 3:00 to surprise me. I got there around 3:30. A little late, but everyone understood and I was very happy.
