Its that time again. The Fishers of Men Tournament I have organized the past 2 years is turning 3 this year. All proceeds are raised for charity in God's name. We always have a blast and give away tons of Door Prizes! Everything from rods and reels, icechests, bar stools, knives, custom welded bbq pits, gift cards, tools, and much much more. We guarantee 150 goodie bags filled with all kinds of, well goodies to the first 150 registered participants plus free tournament T-Shirts.

This year we are going to do something a little different. We are teaming up with 2 other tournaments and we will be having our first Trifecta Tournament. There is a point system to determine the individual winner and we will have an optional Team registration. At the conclusion of all 3 tournaments points will be added to determine the Trifecta winner.

All 3 tournaments will have individual winners, trophies and prizes.

For the Individual Trifecta winner we are thinking of a nice big flat screen TV OR maybe a nice set of rods and reels with a free Charter donated by Redfish himself ;)

For the optional Team registration we are thinking of hosting the Team with an all expense 2 day one night trip to our fishing Cabin. We'll bbq and provide all the refreshments you fish and relax!

The pictures below are the Cover and Inside of a brochure I put together that details the point system and information for each tournament. If you would like me to email it to you it's in MS Publisher format and is about 6mb big. When I convert it to PDF it kind of looks messy. I can also email a larger version of the JPGs if any of you wish.

thanks for the big tip twobits...never knew you were so generous. boy did we slam those reds.....i lost count but i think we were close to 40 and 20 trout. two bits landed several 25 plus inch trout. i made him throw them all back.

Today Ted and Mary met me at the dock at 6:15. Boy are they prompt! ....wait a minute.... i just had a case of deja vu.... seems like I already posted about Ted and Mary's trip. LOL... yes, i did! Last week I took them on Thursday. Today, Mary's son joined in on the fun.

I fully expected a dead calm morning today, but was pleasantly surprised and at the same time irritated by the fact we've had 1 northern blowing for 5 days now!! In any case, as we started moving along the east side flats, the water was still like glass....simply beautiful.

Almost immediately we began to push a bunch of rojos. I didn't plan on fishing this area, but hey..fish were there. I quickly get them set up with rods and was quickly posed with a question from John. "How do you use and throw these reels?" According to John, this was his first fishing trip since he was 12 years old! oh boy...

so hear I go with a quick casting lesson, but quickly notice a wake close by. I decide to show him what to look for and how to cast. Bam! One cast and first red on! I give the rod over to John and he fought the fish with a grin from ear to ear that just made my day. Several minutes later I see he got caught on really quick on how to cast the spinning rod and what wakes to look for. Just then gets my attention by pointing at a wake and proceeding to sight cast to the fish. Bam! he's on all on his own after just one quick casting lesson. I was impressed. He reeled in a decent 18" trout.

Over the hour of so, I stayed in the general area, but was noticing the reds were being difficult. I made one more loop around and came across about a 10-15 fish school that we hit and caught one red out of. What to do.. what to do. with as many fish that were around me, I would normally ask clients to get off and wade the area to make sure we worked it well. That wasn't going to work today. I got back up on plane to look for some other schools since those singles just didn't want to take very well. We hit a few more schools and brought in 3 more reds. I can say though I finally began to see a very good number of single reds cruising all over the place. A very good sign of things to come.

The schools we were hitting were smaller 5-10 fish schools which was making it difficult for Mary and Ted to put a good cast in quick enough. I decided to head south with hopes of possibly coming across a big herd of over 100 fish. No luck though. just a lot of singles. what a problem, eh? LOL Having not found any big herds, i tried our luck at drifting. We made several casts at many cruising fish with only one rat red taking. We saw a few tails, but the darn fish wouldn't keep their fanny up long enough for me to pole to them and have a shot. Enough of this...

Off we go again in search of some reds willing to eat. I go further south to the area we hit last Friday. With minimal boat traffic around, I figured the fish may have come back. Well they did, but they weren't reds. We began to hit some nice trout. We took few short drifts and landed 8 trout before Mary called it (she mistakenly drank a whole bottle of water and....well you know. ) I was close to our half day charter, so we took the long way home by heading over the sand. they wanted to take a look at what the sand looked like before heading in.

As I'm making my way back to the mouth of the arroyo over still glassy conditions on the flats, I notice this huge area of nervous water a couple of hundred yards ahead. I call john and told him to get his rod ready. I came off plan right in front of a HUGE herd of reds. They couldn't believe their eyes!!! Hundreds of reds swimming away from the boat. John as nervous and excited as he was tried to put a cast on them but landed short of the fleeing fish. I threw in right after him and hooked up right away. I gave the rod over to John to who excitedly took over the fight. soon the fish was on board. That huge herd we hit had now split into 4 smaller schools. we hit a coupole more and landed 2 more fish before I couldn't locate them anymore. Nice end to the day. Total for the day 8 Reds and 9 Trout.

a little late, but yes. :o I was out there Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I've posted reports on the fishing forum. I will copy and paste them this afternoon. Hopefully I can post the couple of pics I took. I forgot my camera on the truck on Thursday so no photos of that day....doesn't matter. Not many fish caught that day anyway. It was a tough fly fishing day.

Caught about 20 channel cats using stink bait. Good fun when you don't have the time to make a trip to the Island. Just wish my son was older, would have been a great first fishing trip for a beginner and first timer. In fact, the action was really great. Literally five seconds after casting out I would hook up. In one series of casts I caught 6 fish on 8 casts, the other two were missed hook ups...

yeah thats where my buddy and i usually go when we cant make out to the island. Theres a resaca behind tractor supply that we also hit up that produces some pretty good bass. Weve been going in the mornings and usually hook quite a few on artificials.

During Winter months and the spring, I often find myself dreaming of June weather patterns. Calm winds, glassy water, tailing reds and lots of sun..... ::sigh:: I love it when days like these come around. I know for the most part, a lot of guys hate these kinds of days because they can't drift making fishing next to impossible unless your fishing the ditch or wading. But for sight casting with a fly rod, you can't ask for better conditions than we had today.

This morning Richard Moore was waiting for us at the dock as Rick and I arrived shortly after 6:00am. After loading all the camera gear, we began to push water soon after. Both Rick and I were a little unsure of what to do because the water level dropped by about 4-5" from yesterday. That's a big drop from one day to the next. We had a concern that the fish we found yesterday wouldn't be there anymore. Our concerns were warranted as we early tried to pole the same cove and found no fish.

We moved around a bit before coming across a huge mullet line with many reds mixed in. We shut down and I began to pole while Rick grabbed the fly rod. There were many reds cruising around and several were tailing. One big problem though, all the mullet around were causing the tailing reds to spook as we tried to get close enough for a shot. Being the tremendous fly caster that he is, Rick managed to land a few small reds as they were fleeing. Most of these cast were over 100 ft. if you know much about fly fishing, that's not an easy task with no wind to help. Richard was able to get some decent footage of this action so we made the call to move to the shoreline where the big trout have been hanging.

As we poled along this area, we began to see lots of tailing reds and tailing trout, but once again those darn mullet were causing havoc. We had a lot of shots at several trout ranging between 17 and mid 20's. None of them wanted anything to do with fly early on. After many more attempts, our efforts were finally rewarded. Rick hooked up to nice trout just a hair over 27". This is what were were after....a big fat trout. Can you say "photo op?" LOL. Between my camera, Ricks, and Richard's we must have taken darn near 50 shots of different angles of that fish. She was beautiful. Lionel Richie's song "Lady" kept running through my mind as we finally let her go to lay some eggs for our future fishery.

After that toad, we decided to switch off and I gave it whirl on the casting platform. I had a few shots at some big ones, but I just couldn't coheres any of them to take. I caught one dink trout and a tiny, and I do mean tiny, jack that was probably 8" long. the sad part of catching that jack is that as soon as I hooked up to it, a big momma was swimming away from the bow no more than 20 feet away!!! bummer! It was all good though. We poled for a few more minutes before calling it a day about 11:30 with plenty of footage for Richard's segment. If you guys are from the valley, the program should be airing on Monday evening's telecast. Watch if you can eventhough I probably will only be seen poling the boat on some wide angle shots which is fine by me since this show was about Rick and not about me anyway.

It was a really fun day on the water today. Richard Moore is great individual with a great sense of humor and great personality. This side of him doesn't really come out during his segments so it was a blast to get to see that side of him.

Saturday Night (6-6-09) Trout Fishing with my wife, oldest son and some friends at our cabin. 27 Speckled Trout were brought in that night (keepers). We actually probably caught well over 100 including the undersized. Also hooked on 2 seagulls through out the night :)

When you have women and children with you, this is the best FISHING they can enjoy. I love to fish from the boat dont get me wrong, but its harder for them to be comfortable at night (the fishing I enjoy the most).

Believe me I'm all about my family and I'd love to be with them any day at the cabin than with the boys out on a boat.

Its that time again. The Fishers of Men Tournament I have organized the past 2 years is turning 3 this year. All proceeds are raised for charity in God's name. We always have a blast and give away tons of Door Prizes! Everything from rods and reels, icechests, bar stools, knives, custom welded bbq pits, gift cards, tools, and much much more. We guarantee 150 goodie bags filled with all kinds of, well goodies to the first 150 registered participants plus free tournament T-Shirts.

This year we are going to do something a little different. We are teaming up with 2 other tournaments and we will be having our first Trifecta Tournament. There is a point system to determine the individual winner and we will have an optional Team registration. At the conclusion of all 3 tournaments points will be added to determine the Trifecta winner.

All 3 tournaments will have individual winners, trophies and prizes.

For the Individual Trifecta winner we are thinking of a nice big flat screen TV OR maybe a nice set of rods and reels with a free Charter donated by Redfish himself ;)

For the optional Team registration we are thinking of hosting the Team with an all expense 2 day one night trip to our fishing Cabin. We'll bbq and provide all the refreshments you fish and relax!

LOL. I haven't been hiding. I've been fairly busy with charters and other stuff. I'm sure you've read my reports on the flats forum. I keep forgetting to copy and paste them over here. I had a charter on Monday and 2 on Tuesday. I posted abou the one on Monday but haven't had time to write about the 2 on Tuesday.
Tomorrow i'm taking 2 doctors from Dr. Bill Schneider's office and on Saturday.......................................... ................................Roberto Garza will be back on the Curlew. :woot:

My Regional Superviser went fishing around marker 51 this past weekend. He limited out in about 1 1/2 hrs. He used the Berkley Gulp. I'm not sure what color he used but man some of those trout were big.

how did your charter go on saturday?

As I was gassing up this morning and worrying if I could find fish for today's charter with Roberto Garza,(current Right Guard for the Chicago Bears), I found them at the Stripes taco counter ordering about 100 tacos. Robert's brother and 2 cousins were joining us on todays adventure.

When ever i get a charter with 3 or 4 guys on board, my mentality, technique, and normal game plan has to change. My perferred game plan with 2 people on board is to pole them down shorelines looking for tailing or cruising reds. When 3 or 4 people are on board, that game plan just doesn't work. So I'm left with simply drifting and blindcasting until the sun is high enough to see or having the guys get off the boat to wade. Both of course can be very effective, but I try to shy away from wading clients as much as possible unless they really insist on it. If I do end up having them wade, i will always choose water no more than knee deep and it must be crystal clear. I would rather not have a situation where a client gets stung by a ray....no thank you very much.

So with the guys on board and as eager as lab going after a stick, I stopped at the location I've been stopping all week. The first couple of drifts were reasonable. We had about 4 trout on board, 3 reds, and about another 10-15 trout where the guys decided catch and release before the fish was on board. We saw and heard many slurps from trout wanting to eat but just would miss the lure. Several times, they hit properly and then were soon set free as they were being reeled in. I was a good first couple of hours, but the day was still young.

I moved several more times and every venue we tried, at least one fish was caught. About 10:30, we chose to hit the sand and tried to get the guys to sightcast to some reds on the crystal clear sand flats. If memory serves me correct, I think we caught 4 or 5 reds up there, but all of them were rat reds. I will post a pic of one of the reds that somehow grew up with a blunt nose. Make you wonder what he ran into to having look like that.

Overall, the day ended up OK. Just another one of those grind it out kind of days. We returned to the dock around 1:30. Total fish kept today 10 trout and 3 reds. Like I said, not horribly bad, but a lot of hard work to get what we did.

Roberto has booked another day this week to take him and his wife. I think he wants to sight cast more on this trip. I would love to have him hook up to one of those big trout we've been running into recently. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

Went really well. Had about 25 boats sign up. I sadly did not place. My 33" red did not cut it. But we had a good time it had been a while since we went to the Gas Well flats. Caught and released some other smaller reds. 1 tourney down 2 to go.

Yesterday evening, I left Twobits a message giving him one hour to call me to let me know if he wanted to go fising on Friday morning. With 3 minutes to spare, he jumped at the opportunity. Unfortunately, he had to cancel due to a death in the family which has me a little confused cuz they either passed away last night or he forgot he had a funneral to atttend. As soon as he informed (just as i arrived at his house at 4:40am), I shot a text to two forum peeps. IbleedPurple and Chillywillypatron have continually advised me that they are ready at a moments notice. Let's put them to the test!

So off I go with only one other person on my boat. We did really well today. caught about 20 reds and 6 trout. of course we only kept 6 reds and the 6 trout.

sounds good. I would be shocked beyond belief and probably wouldnt want to even charge you if we only caught one fish. Fishing has been fairly consistent recently, but it can change any day. The last month or so i've been averaging 16 fish or so. sometimes more reds than trout...sometimes more trout than reds, sometimes an equal amount of both. :)

Hi guys I would like to remind you about my upcoming tournament. It will be held on August 22 -23 at Marchan's White Sands Motel and Marina in Port Isabel.

The money raised goes to help local parishes and charities in The Rio Grande Valley. All information including flyers, registration cards, and sponsor letters can be downloaded from http://www.llmtrifectafishing.com We are still seeking sponsors to help fund the tournament and for any door prize donations. If you would like to help out please PM me. There is still time for recognition on our T-Shirts. We are also looking for items to fill our goodie bags with. If you own a bussiness or know anyone that would be intrested 150 bags are given away and its a great way to spread the word about your bussiness.

This year we are happy to announce that KVMV 96.9 our Valley's Christian radio station will be on hand during registration on Saturday to play music and do live remotes. We are also very excited to announce that Fred Rodriguez of South Texas Sportsman will be promoting our Tournament during his next two shows on August 8th and 15th. His show airs Saturday Mornings at 11:30 AM on FOX. Please tune in to check it out! I will also post the commercial so you can view.

i haven't had very many charters the last couple of weeks. I had one last week, one the week prior to that....it's been kind of slow, but i don't mind right now.

I went out today and had a blast sightcasting to reds and trout with the flyrod.

I sent a text late last night to chilllwilly and ibleedP offering them a day on the water with me. Ibleed never responded, but chillywilly jumped at the opportunity.

Today was a very good day. we caught a little over 20 reds and kept 11 or 12 trout. so we brought home of 12 reds and 11 or 12 trout.

hmmm i thought it was a lil over 40 reds kept 12? :snicker: anyways it was a great great day for fishing. red was all over the fish. i can honestly say is one of the greatest fisherman i have ever known . i believe he casted 3 times in a row and all 3 times he caught fish! guys that good. . . he even changed up the lure color just to prove a point. and well he did.. all in all a good day. .

p.s dont order brisket burgers from the stripes in rio hondo :puke:
