Mercy me o'my. Seems like ages since I haven't been on the water. I finally got out there today. The guys at the adolph thomae park stayed asleep. A guy finally opened the gate w/ his own "key" (bolt cutter :o) LOL
so after a late start to the morning since the gate was closed, I could not decide where to go. The morning presented itself w/ northwest wind that was going to make any drifts difficult. I decided to head straight east out the mouth of the arroyo. I didn't see a whole lot fish being pushed by my boat, but a whole lot more than my last time out. After running south and then back north again, I came off plane in about a foot of water. Even though the wind was blowing 5-10 mph, the water was slick for the most part. This made spotting fish fairly easy.....now if they would only cooperate. About 15 minutes into my wade, I landed a rat red that was probably 18-19 inches. A few mintues later, a cruising red appeared. I made a cast a few feet away and the fish reacted w/ a fury. It inhaled the lure within seconds. A short fight later, I landed a 26" red.
I continued in that area for the next couple of hours. There weren't a ton of reds around, but enough to keep me going. The water was just gorgeous! There wasn't a cloud in the sky. They only thing that would have made this a better day is if the wind had been from the Southeast. I had to be staring into the sun most of the morning and since it's moving further south, seeing fish become more diffucult wading into it.
I initially was planning on heading over to Port mansfield, but changed my mind at the last minute. :( I'll probably head over there later this week.
We called it a day at noon since I had to come in early to make a BBQ for my father in law's birthday. :) i've been marinating some chicken over night. trying out 2 new marinades. I hope I don't regret it. :o
Anywho, we landed a total of 10-11 reds. no trout or flounder. i think i'm gonna go for some flounder when i head to the east cut.

Ok...now let me try to recap the 3 consecutive days last week. i was on the water Thursday, friday, and Saturday. Each day was a little different with varying results, but here's a recap.
Thursday:
I took a couple of friends out of port mansfield with intentions of looking around and hopefully getting a chance to do some flounder fishing along the east cut. We headed north for a good stretch and fished a couple of areas with no success. Not wanting to get my friends bored to death just driving around, I headed back south to fish a little more. The first few drifts were less than stellar resulting in several schooly trout and only one solid red.
with all the running around i did early on, time flew by and when I finally decided to try for some founder a strong northeast wind came out of no where. Combined with an outgoing tide, the conditions got pretty ugly fast. We tried it for a bit but got tired of fighting the wind and current. I did manage to land one decent flattie which kind of satisfied my thirst for a while.
Slow day overall, but can't say i really tried very hard. a total of 3 trout, 1 red, and 1 flounder were had.
Friday.
what started out as a two person trip ended up being a one person deal. One of the guys decided not to go.... his loss.
I took a sniff around the area I say some fish on Monday, but it was void of any fish, so i headed to my honey hole. This north west bay generally holds plenty of fish, but not having been there for a while concerned me. I went in on the south end of the venue and proceeded north. There wasn't much of anything until I reached the northern edge of the bay. I came across a decent size school and several singles. For the next couple of hours we fished the area hooking up to 6 solid reds, about another 8 rat reds, and 4 trout. We took it in early to go have a double double at Chilly willy's.
Saturday:
While filleting fish on friday, a guy came in from the bay with 2 other guys. They didn't have much success and just happened to see the reds on the cleaning table. He asked if I was available on Saturday to take them out. I really was trying to avoid getting booked because of whitewing season, but hey... it's work :)
We headed out at dawn and went through my normal routine, but with intentions of ending up where I caught fish the day before. I didn't see nearly as many fish, but still fished for a while. the first drift was terrible. no reds or trout, just skippy jacks.
I ventured further north and was waved down by some guys in an airboat. Doing my duty, i slowed down and headed their way. as I shut down and asked how i could help, I saw why they waved me down. One of the anglers had imbedded a trebble hook from a topwater lure into his thumb. They didn't have any wire cutters and needed some help. I could see the barb was stuck in his thumb, but had not come out the other end. I hated to have to tell him that he had to push hook all the way through to be able to cut the barb and slip the rest of it out. Well he didn't have much of a choice. The guy grabs the hook and took it like a man.... OUCH. His friend then proceeded to cut the barb and then all was well. Back to fishing now.
I moved little further north and took a couple of drifts that produced a couple of trout and 1 red. by now I was getting a lilttle frustrated, but still confident i could find the fish. Moving over to the east side, I started pushing some fish and shut it down. We took a total of 3 drifts in that area and managed to haul in a total of 20 reds and 6 trout. A fairly good day after a slow start.
I hope i can get to the photos soon, but i'm fighting a cold so I'm sleepy and tired. maybe later. time for some nyquil :(

Fire destroys boat factory
PORT O’CONNOR – Fire destroyed a 5,000 square-foot boat factory in Port O’Connor Saturday night.
Shoalwater Boats, at 20 Monroe St., went up in flames at around 10 p.m., said Port O’Connor Fire Chief Cale Hummel. Even with the help of the Seadrift, Six Mile and Port Lavaca fire departments, it took the firefighters nearly five hours to subdue.
“It had the whole building engulfed by the time we got there,” Hummel said.
During the rescue effort, the fire’s heat twisted and weakened the building’s steel beams, Hummel said. Eventually, the middle of the roof caved in.
The fire chief was not sure what caused the fire, but he thought it might have been a chemical or electrical malfunction. He said there was no suspicion of arson.
Law enforcement blocked off roads near the building and asked some neighbors to leave their homes, but no evacuation was ordered, he said.
No one was injured during the fire, but some valuable property was destroyed, Hummel said.
“I know he had a boat that sells for roughly $9,000 sitting ready to go out the door,” said Hummel of Shoalwater Boats owner Steve Bell.
Bell did not return phone calls for comment.

just got back from today's trip. here's the report:
it was the best of times.... it was the worst of times. I don't recall what author wrote this, but he was dead on! My charter this morning was out of Port Mansfield guiding a couple of guys from Dallas. They were down here for a cast and blast weekend.
As i backed up the trailer far enough to get on and drive it off the trailer. As I get ready to start it, i prime the gas pump and it was way to soft. A few seconds later, i caught the scent of gas. I felt around under my console and found the problem. My water separator has corroded enough to creat a small hole where gas was leaking out at a significant rate. I was in a pickle!
i pulled the boat and trailer back out of the water to see if there was anything i could do. I tried to plug up the hole, but ended up just make the hole bigger. I finally decided to remove the water separator unit and bypass the system entirely by connecting the gas direct. i cut the two hoses that lead into and out from the unit. Now I had anotherr problem. the two hoses were different sizes so i had to find some kind of plastic tube that would fit in as male on one end and male on the other! I tried shaft of ball point pen.... to small. right at that point, the guy incharge of setting up the charter called. I informed him of my dilema and advised him i would have it fixed withing a few minutes. I look all over my suburband looking for somehting that would work and I found it! A Sharpie marker.
I took out the front end and cut off the back part to create a hollow tube. It worked like a charm! A few minutes later I was on my way to pick up my 2 guys that were patiently waiting. Not a good way to start off a charter especially since this was the first on I was doing for this company, but I was confident that finding fish would not be a problem. We headed out around 7:30.... a good 45 minutes late. :o
I came off plane in a west side lagoon where we just spanked the fish the day before. within the frist 5 minutes, one of the guys was on! A good sized redfish came on board for the first fish of the day. Another 5 minutes passed and the other guy landed an 18 inch trout. After he took the photo he wanted to take, he places the trout in the ice chest and decides to look at it instead of closing the lid. You guessed it, the fish flops around and out of the ice chest and back into the water. (His version of catch and release. LOL)
Over the next 2 hours the guys catch reds and trout consistently. Limits were had and in the ice chest by 10:00am. This kind of made the rest of the trip a little boring for them since they couldn't keep anymore fish. They were good sports about it. They caught several more reds and trout before he headed back to the dock at 11:30. They had to be back by 12:00 to get ready for their afternoon hunt. In the end it was a pretty good day. Total fish caught: 20 Trout (four 21" trout) and about 12-14 reds... I lost count of the reds. sorry.
pics to come soon.

ya..it turned out to be a pretty good outing. I reeeeealy wanted to make a good impression with this guy who set the deal up. He owns a huge ranch around here and sets these kinds of trips up regularly. It was suppossed to have been a 4 or 5 boat deal for an electrical company and their vips, but the recent hurricane forced some revisions to their plans. They only brought down 7 people, so only 3 boats went out. My mission was accomplished. I was the only guide out of the three to have the clients limit out. What made the trip even better is that the guys caught most of the fish themselves. I didn't have to do much fishing and i was happy about that.

it's the connection. I can't get any kind of home service from any provider. They claim there are no lines to support it. i stuck w/ using my sprint wireless card that gets a very weak signal. When i'm in town and have full signal strength, it's great, but not in my house. :(

if the fall is very mild, november should be silly. Last year, i had the best day ever in November. That's the day i took out a couple that ended up catching 30 reds by 9:00am and then topped it off with 50 trout by noon. I can't even dream of matching that output again..... but it could happen.

ok now I know what u mean. I've seen them on the web, but not inperson. They look pretty good, but you would have to haul it to the location where you would want to fish. WHAT!!!! YOU'RE A FEMALE???? I had no idea.
Anyway, to answer your question, I've taken many females on charters before and most have done ok. I usually encourage them to go to the bathroom right before we leave the dock. The trips usually last 6-8 hours and most are able to hold it that long. I do remember taking my wife fishing before we were married. She along w/ a friend who went with us REALLY had to go. i headed out to some deeper water (about 4 ft) and had them jump in to "relieve" themselves. :o Problem solved!
Now, if an emergency of #2 ever comes around......well you're out of luck, so go before going on a boat. :D
Hope this helps. :)

Last night I had planned to take my wife fishing this morning, but she had some things to do and could not go. I got up and looked outside this morning. We had clear skies and not a wisp of air. I got the urge to go.
I called a few friends who usually can get off on a moments notice. The first two said "no can do", but the third quickly said "I'm ready!" I called up my dad whose always ready and we headed out fairly late. After fueling up and grabbing a Taco, we hit the water around 9:45am. My initial game plan was to check around on the east side of the intercoastal hoping to come across some herds of reds.
As I motored along I revised my plan and decided to check out a west side lagoon that's usually impassable during low water conditions, but since water has been way up for awhile, I decided to check it out. Bad call. A bunch of green algea has bloomed and overtaken a lot of area. I quickly darted back out.
I reinstated game plan #1 and head out to the east side. There was a little more wind than I expected, but some glassy water was still around. I head south almost directly east of the Duncan house with no signs of schooling redfish. I saw several singles and doubles being pushed, but wasn't really interested in that action at the moment. After about an hour of looking around, I called off game plan #1 and headed back to the west side lagoon where I had been nailing trouts and reds for a few weeks now.
We arrived at the spot right at 11:00am and proceeded to fish. Within a few minutes, the first trout was on. We had somewhat constant action for the next 2 1/2 hours. we called it a day right at 1:30pm. In those 2 1/2 hours, we landed 9 reds and 8 trout along with few other undersized fish. Not too bad for a very short scouting trip.
I post some pics soon. It's late and I need some shut eye. 'Til next time.... now go get your line wet!

Today i had the pleasure of taking two pretty good fishermen from Houston who were down for a cast and blast weekend with the Canela Ranch. i was pretty confident about today's trip because of the last several weeks of great fishing.
The morning brought us a consistent wind of about 10-12 mph. Just enough to ripple up the water and remove the glass. I headed straight to the venue where I had taken Darth Wader on Thursday and had found hundreds of fish. We had some hook ups fairly quick, but mostly trout and some rat reds. the large number of big reds were just not there early on. as the morning progressed, we caught several trout, but the reds were just not showing themselves.
once the sun came up high enough, I was able to spot some crusing reds and sight cast to them using a gulp. The short morning trip yielded 9 keeper trout (1 was a nice 23") and 5 keeper reds. not a bad haul for the day, but kind of dissapointing compared to the last several trips. The guys were very happy which is the most important thing.

goooooo question. it's much easier to post the reports here and on the other forum. most of the time i'm at home when i have a chance to try to update, but my wireless connection is not very strong so it takes forever to update.
I'm still waiting for buzzy to offer to update it for me since he is a computer guru. :)

i can't wait to get it. They called me last week to spec it out again just in case I changed my mind on something. I did....
they raised my hopes up a bit. I was thinking since they were calling already, the boat my come in earlier than expected. Not a chance.
March is still the expected date.

still trying to get it for you chucky, but here's an example of why i think it's a little high.
a 1995 kenner (similar design) w/ a 2000 135hwp Merc sold for $4000 not too long ago in Mcallen. That price was a really low, but the guy really wanted to get rid of it.
Make sure to get an idea when the water pump was last chgd as well as the lower unit oil. did you find out what the make of the motor is? If the engine is also a 2000, then I wouldn't go for more than around 10K.
I'm selling my 2001 16 ft shoalwater scooter w/ a rear poling platform and front casting platform, a 2005 Yami 2stroke 90 Hpw (currently w/ about 130 hrs) for $7,500 with trailer. Two different kinds of boats, but it will give you a good guage to go by.
I'll still check around for you.

well that's another issue you have to contend w/ when buying that kind of boat. You need at least 2ft of water to do anything. You really need to consider what kind of fishing you are going to be getting into before getting any boat. Some may not understand what i mean by that so i will try to explain:
here are a few different styles/types of fishing you can do-
1. anchor up and chunk bait- deep water
2. anchor up and chunk bait - by the ditch (intercoastal)
3. anchor up and chunk bait - shallow water under 1-2 ft of water
4. drift deep water
5. drift shallow water
6. anchor and wade waist deep water
7. anchor and wade shallow water
8. Pole shallow water
i may have missed something, but that's a good list. there are certain boats that will let you do some on that list and others that will just get you stuck.
some boats will handle deep water waves better than others. My boat is horrible at taking on 2-3 ft waves head on, so I don't do that. :)
some boats like the blue waves are less stable and will rock a whole lot more when drifting.
some boats that claim to run shallow will get bottom out and get stuck if you decide to shut down in a foot of water. the main question here is not how shallow a boat can run, but how much water do i need to get up and out of the hole.
some parents are paranoid about having a boat w/ no sides. I say they are safer since there is no side to trip you up and flip you overboard. If you happen to go in, it's a lot easier to get into a boat w/ no sides than having to get up two feet above the water line.
Night fishing...day fishing???
sooooooo many questions you have to ask youself before u buy. :(

go by and visit Tim Clancey at New Water Boatworks and take a look the factory. Pretty impressive. I haven't seen anyboat w/ as much detail ashe puts on his boats. Even the little things like the plugs are stainless steel.
Just make sure to tell him I sent you so I can get some brownie points with him and maybe get an even better price in the future. ;)
