yeah well this one aint about seafood either sorry. lol I don't know why anyone in their right mind would go eat Tex-Mex food, at Los Asados. La wifa took me there the first time maybe back in the 90's maybe and said thats where EVERYBODY goes. I saw the line out the door so I had a good feeling about. I liked the tunez, the trying real hard to look Mexican decor, I went along with it. Ok, I learned real quick where all the Vatos Locos For EVR worked no problem thats right up my alley. But when we sat down and they brought the obligatory "chips" and "salsa" I thought something was not right. Number 1. Chips in a Tex-Mex restaurant really should not look AND taste like warmed up store bought bag chips. 2. The "salsa", where do I begin? Everyone has different tastes and of course levels of heat in their salsa. Salsa when served cold should at least have these basic ingredients: tomato, onion, cilantro and?...HEAT!!! whether its serrano, jalapeno, piquin SOMETHING!! I have never before eaten Salsa with absolutely no heat, I was a stranger in a strange land. I had the crispy tacos, chalupa with a fajita taco on flour tortilla. The corn tortilla from the tacos and chalupa both had the same crunch and texture that Taco Bell shells have-oops I just admitted eating at Taco Bell, lol. Rice-bland, beans may have been fresh but Dehydrated beans that you add water to taste just about the same if you don't have the common sense to season it in some way at least make an effort. Fajita portion size, inadequate, taste very forgettable. Flour tortilla was decent. Having been there many many times to humor the wife, I think the cheese enchiladas deserve some attention, if you want to try the blandest enchilada sauce on the planet try those , there's twice as much sauce as their is enchilada. 2 Thumbs down 2 Big Toes down. Positives: all the hardworking Vatos from San Bene that I know that worked there over the years, shout out to Homegirl and the rest of the homies from Barrio El Jardin, Barrio La Gallina, The Ranch, nice hairnets.

If you have a choice between Los Asados and La Playa IMHMO the best bet of the two is to go with La Playa.

Orale , getting back to island seafood. I try to be at the island every possible day that my familys schedule allows, school , college work doesnt always allow for the drive to and fro. What I wanted to know was how about breakfast? When I stay the night or multiple nights I'll usually eat at the hotel and for the most part the ones I stay at have oysters, shrimp, eggs and omelets to order plus the other usual stuff so now that i think of it who has got some good or the best plain old breakfast tacos(price/value wise, taste size, where do the locals go to get the real deal.

Whether it's Dirty Al's , Big Donkey on SPI ,or Pelican Station at the foot of the bridge...same family...same recipes. The Pelican Station is great and spacious, lots of historical photos of old Port Isabel. The view is awesome especially in the evening when you can see the lighted causeway and the island skyline.Try it out.

yessir I'm really feelin what you're saying about la isla . In my opinion there is no other place I would rather spend my free time not SA, Austin, Chicago nowhere. I feel that for some people like myself that atmosphere and island vibe is therapeutic in some way and I feel the negative toxins that for many years poisoned my mind and body just gently being forced out bringing on a "high" better than anything man can ever invent. I don't know maybe I'm just a little safado.lol
edit: yes there is one place I would rather be but it is just not an option to go w the family, Mi Lindo Querido Mexico no me puedo olvidar. Ajua!Last edited by JacketVato89; 03-24-2012 at 07:58 PM.

Pos Vato, you need to be the food critic for the newspaper. My feelings are hurt, I had no idea I didn't know what Mexican Food was or should be. I must have gained my weight from all the damn Krispy Kremes i've been eating, I'm at a lost. But my wife and you have the same taste, she LOVES La Playa. I prefer the sissy salsa from Los Asados (heatless) and Pappasito's Catina (also heatless). What do you recommend in the McAllen area?

I just don't make the time to go from Harlingen to Mcallen and La wifa feels like a stranger in a strange land when we cross the Cameron-Hidalgo county line, I don't know what it is but she's not crazy about the traffic I guess. Maybe I can work at VMS, they'll let me work in my underwear, they let anyone write for them. haha

Brownsville's Amelias is good but Los Mismos next to expressway by Valley Regional is the best or breakfast. 1.99 gorditas with potatoe and egg or chorizo. Mariscos De La Rosa in Brownsville is second to none.
All things change but truth, and that truth alone, lives on forever.

Yes Los Mismos coming from Brownsville headed north it would be the Alton Gloor exit? maybe Im off or lost . Now that I think about it La wifa used to tell me they would order tacos by the dozen when she worked there at the hospital and they were something to talk about, but she never brought me one to try myself. She's got this weird idea that I'm some kinda critic i guess. crazy wifa

I have to say that if I did not know the Charles clan I would not eat there. it is not all that but they treat you very well when they start to recognize your face..that is why they are so successful....they have the same customers and winter Texans coming back day after day after day after day...yeah you know how it goes.......
