Los Fresnos boys, Weslaco High girls win at 32-5A meet
The Weslaco Pantherettes are champions again.
In a solid effort, the Weslaco girls’ track and field
team dominated the 32-5A track and field meet
on Tuesday and Thursday to recapture the league
title and ending a five-year reign by the San
Benito Lady Greyhounds.
Weslaco took a sizeable lead after r the field
events and continued their dominance on
Thursday during the running finals to tally 180
points and the crown.
San Benito was second with 122 points and
Brownsville Rivera was third with 116 points.
Weslaco last won the District 32-5A title in 2005.
It was the Pantherettes first ever girls district
title.
When head coach Pablo Almaguer took over, he
wanted to establish the same tradition that he
helped built on the boys side when he was a
hurdler for the Panthers in the mid 1990s under
the legendary Jimmy Platt.
Almaguer’s teams have been within striking
distance the past couple of seasons. But the Lady
Greyhounds and coach Danny De La Rosa have
built their own tradition too.
This was Almaguer and the Pantherettes’ year,
though.
"The girls have been working hard trying to
establish a tradition here too," Almaguer said.
"All they had to do was believe in themselves that
they were a good team. I knew we had a good
team and now that hard work is paying off."
Weslaco had been on somewhat of a roll in the
last month.
Starting with a big team win at the Meet of
Champions last month then another team win at
the Harlingen Relays, the Panthers culminated a
nice late season run with the league title.
"It was a good meet," Almaguer said. "San Benito
and Rivera are good teams and very well–
coached."
Briana De Leon was Weslaco Highs standout performer, on a night of many fine performances from the girls teams, as she earned multiple victories in the 100m and 200m sprints.
The top three finishers in every event qualify for the Region IV-5A Tournament later this month in San Antonio.
