    Default Hidalgo--Head Coach Opening

Just heard on the news, jorge pena resigned. Said he'd like to go back to the 5A ranks and brought up the harlingen south vacancy. Looks like hes very interested. Wanted to add in the link to the article .. http://www.rgvsports.com/articles/hi...eña_coach.html

Not sure on their record, i just know they didn't make the playoffs this year. And he was at hidalgo 4 years, they made the playoffs 2 out of the 4 seasons he was there.

Yeah, it came out on the News...
They mentioned that he has something around a 26-13 record. (I may be mistaken though).

I wonder what prompted his decision to resign. Very interesting...

Are you suggesting a coach swap?

Hidalgo Coach to Mission and a Mission coach to Hidalgo?

That would be something, but I was actually told by some people who work there at Vets that he already left for HIdalgo. Like I said before, don't like to spread rumors but these people work at Vets and they say he has cleared out his office and LEFT!!!

Ten finalists announced for Hidalgo job

Pirates' post draws plenty of interest

    January 15, 2009 - 8:55 PM

    ARMANDO GARZA
HIDALGO - You can't blame Albert Guerra for being excited.
The Hidalgo athletic director saw a virtual who's who of hot coaching commodities apply for the Pirates' vacant head football coach position.
And from a whopping 25 applicants, the list has been cut to 10 finalists, each of whom brings something special to the table.
"Heck yes, we're excited," Guerra said. "We've got a good list of candidates. We're very, very happy and our administration is excited about acquiring our new head coach."
The position became available when former head coach Jorge Peña resigned in December after four seasons with the Pirates.
Immediately, two current head coaches (and one former) jump off the list.
La Villa head coach Eugene Garza has compiled a 16-6 record along with two District 32-A titles in two seasons with the Cardinals.
The former Edcouch-Elsa assistant took La Villa to the regional quarterfinals last season.
The other current coach is Houston St. Pius X head coach Clarence Kirk, winner of three TAPPS state championships (1999, 2006, 2007).
Kirk, who also applied at Harlingen South before they selected Gilbert Leal, has been a part of seven state titles at the school. During that time he coached former all-state quarterback and current Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak.
Also on the list is former Raymondville and Mission Veterans coach Carlos Longoria, who went 24-26 in five seasons with the Patriots before being reassigned in December.
Longoria took each team to the playoffs and has amassed a 51-51 career mark.
Other familiar names include former Rio Hondo and current PSJA Memorial offensive coordinator Steve Marroquín, Hidalgo defensive coordinator Roy Peña, and Weslaco East offensive coordinator Michael Burget.
Marroquín was on the Pirates staff as recently as 2004, while Peña, a longtime Valley defensive coach, served as the Pirates' first assistant. Burget has called the plays for the Wildcats after a stint on Dave Evans' staff in Donna.
Additionally, Los Fresnos DC Jason Wheeler, Hidalgo assistant Felipe Barrera, PSJA North OC David Duty and PSJA North assistant Luis Navarro close out the list.
Wheeler was also an applicant at Harlingen South while Duty was Joe Sanchez's first assistant at PSJA Memorial before moving to Pharr.
Guerra said the interviewing process should be completed by Wednesday and the district hopes to submit a name for recommendation shortly thereafter.
"To have 25 applicants for a 3A job says a lot," Guerra said. "It shows why we're the No. 1 public high school in Texas and says a lot about our administrative support."
Guerra added Hidalgo hopes to select its new coach at the Jan. 26 board meeting.

Some good names on that list...the one that surprises me is Clarence Kirk. He's been at St. Pius X here in Houston for YEARS! He's an excellent coach and would be an excellent choice for Hidalgo if they ever want to get rid of the "compadre system" stigma.

Why would someone leave their alma mater and want to come to the Valley, unless they are looking to retire in a few years. Just makes you wonder. It would be great if he wants to come for the long haul, but 2 years and out would not help Hidalgo either.
