    Default UTPA BASEBALL

I have met the new coach and his staff and am very excited!
Bad thing is he did not come in till early September and by NCAA recruiting rules was not able to bring in kids . Good thing is he found some excellent walk on players to help with this season, and has already signed some great kids fpr next. NCAA does not allow mid year transfers like before, and with only 11.7 scholarships, it's tough. The coach has been to the college world series (NAIA and Div 2) three times in 12 years, and won it all once. Now that is what we need down here. I encourage all UTPA alumni whether ex-ball players or not to meet this man. Once you meet him you too will be excited of things to come. My prediction, we will have a ring within 3, 4 maybe 5 years.

I have spoken to some of the players, one kid a Junior told me that he has learned more baseball in the past two months than he did the past two years he had been at UTPA. The other players I spoke to have nothing but positive things to say about the coaches and the program. That my friends is promising.

Very Nice to hear UTPA is on the rise 84Bobcat. I really hope they can joing a conference because as long as they play as an Independent, it'll be tough to get recruits down here. The guy comes from Florida so he'll like the weather here too.. We need to take him to some fajitas ( My fav are Los Asados in Harlingen) or to any taco stand in the RGV!

Default This is the last Year UTPA is independent

    July 11, 2008

The University of Texas-Pan American celebrated a landmark decision today to join the Great West Conference, an all-sports league, which will provide a home for 11 of 14 UTPA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics programs.

"Today is a major milestone in the history of the University and our athletics program. After a decade without an all-sports conference affiliation, the University and especially our UTPA Broncs and Lady Broncs are proud to accept admission into the Great West Conference," UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cαrdenas said. "This is a significant occasion for our University and our student-athletes and coaches who have represented UTPA athletically over the years with great pride."

UTPA is one of six NCAA Division I independent schools to accept a membership into the Great West, a football-only conference since 2004, which most recently decided to expand its organization to an all-sports conference to include basketball, volleyball, baseball, and other sports. A press conference was held at the Visitors Center to announce UTPA's membership.

Joining UTPA in the Great West Conference are Utah Valley University, The University of North Dakota, The University of South Dakota, Houston Baptist University, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The UTPA sports programs that will fall under the umbrella of the Great West include baseball, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, women's golf, women's tennis, and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. The remainder of UTPA's athletics programs - men's golf, men's tennis, and men's indoor and outdoor track and field - already compete in other conferences.

Even though a conference schedule for the Great West will not officially start until 2009-2010, Street said this will be a good opportunity for UTPA to start working as part of conference and also use the resources available to help refine the athletics department.

I agree that this coach is an excellent coach. I will be attending some home baseball games @ UTPA. I just sometimes think that UTPA does not invest as much money into athletics as it should. You have an enrollment of 17,337 students and you can't even field a team in every sport. There isn't even a soccer team (men's or women's). UTEP has an enrollment of 20,000. You're going to tell me that 2,600 students is the difference as to why we don't have these sports @ UTPA.

Also, one thing that I really like about this baseball coach is that he has recruited players from the valley.

    UTPA Camp Price
Camp cost: $60 per day or $100 for two days. A $25 deposit will reverse your spot, with the balance due upon arrival at camp.

Participants of the camp do need to bring a glove, spikes, shoes (for batting cage and locker room), pants, bat, helmet, shorts and anything else brought to a regular baseball game.
