(EDCOUCH) – On Sunday night, Edcouch-Elsa head football coach Joe Marichalar got a call from his star quarterback who had one important question to ask.
“Marco (Aguinaga) called me last night to ask me what time practice was going to start on Monday,” said Marichalar.
Aguinaga was one of the many players on the Edcouch-Elsa football team eager to hit the field as the first day of practice for the 2016 football season commenced Monday morning.
“Our boys were definitely pumped up for today’s first day of practice,” said Marichalar. “They had been working hard all summer and in their minds they are shooting for the top.”
“Now our job as coaches is to be on point and make sure to get them there.”
The Jackets had a Cinderella-type season in 2015 as they overcame a ton of injuries in the regular season and entered the playoffs healthy and as a result, advanced all the way to the third round.
As the 2016 season draws near, E-E has their sights set on making another nice run and to quite possibly break down that proverbial third round door.
“At Edcouch-Elsa, we always set the bar high and expect to win championships here,” said Marichalar. “Last season was definitely a memorable season and I was proud of the way the kids overcame those injuries and made a nice run through the playoffs.”
“But that was then and this is now. We have to create our own identity in 2016 and I feel we have the talent to do some great things.”
Entering day one, Marichalar and his coaches talk about what they plan to focus on.
“The first day is procedures and progression and obviously we want to have everything in play,” said Marichalar. “But the fundamentals of the game are what we are looking for in day one. Things at easy as knowing how to break a huddle is what we are looking for.”
“If we can fix the tiniest details right now, when we start the season we can work on things more complex. Getting all the easy stuff and all the detailed stuff out of the way is the main goal for day one and the preseason.”
Aguinaga was one of the many Jackets players that were itching to hit the football field and is ready and raring to go.
“Man I am fired up and excited to get started on this season,” said Aguinaga. “I put in a lot of work over the summer and all of that was build-up for my senior year.”
“I am ready to give it my all and today we begin our trek for a great 2016 football season.”
