(MERCEDES) – Mercedes Lady Tigers head volleyball coach Judy Gutierrez knew her team had stayed active over the summer and as a result, liked what she had seen in the first days of practice.
However, her real assessment of her team’s progress was going to come in their two scrimmages which took place on Friday and Saturday.
“We faced Brownsville Hanna, PSJA Memorial, La Feria, and San Benito over the past two days and all four of those teams were in the playoffs last year,” said Gutierrez. “We like to schedule tough teams like this in order to see where we stand and how we stack up with some good competition.”
“I have always felt that if we can compete with these types of teams, then we can compete with anybody. I feel playing these top type caliber of teams is only going to help us improve and get better.”
Gutierrez thoroughly analyzed her girls in the scrimmage and wanted to see if all of the work that they had put in during the summer and into the first four days of practice had really paid off.
So far, Gutierrez really likes what she has seen from her team and feels that they are ahead of the eight-ball so far.
“The covering, the blocking, setting up, getting out serve-receive target and our pass to target looks really good so far and what I really like is the girls are working together,” said Gutierrez. “On Friday, we looked ok but on Saturday we looked very good. I saw a lot of good things from the girls and as of right now, I think we are ahead of where we need to be. It appears all of the work over the summer has definitely helped and if we can continue to do the little things, then I feel this will be a great season for us.”
