Let’s Move Pep Rally & McAllen Kids’ Marathon set for Saturday

Guest stars will tour 12 McAllen ISD campuses Friday

The third annual Let’s Move! Pep Rally and McAllen Kids’ Marathon will be 8-9:15 a.m. Saturday, September 10 at Fred’s Pharmacy Field at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.


This event is for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The special guests will include former pro and college football stars Keith Davis, Clarence Lee and Donavan Williams.


At the event, students will run their first mile as part of an 18-week effort to complete a marathon (26.2 miles). Students will run their final mile in the McAllen Kids Marathon on Saturday, Jan. 14, at McAllen Convention Center. Each child will receive a free t-shirt, finisher’s medal and water bottle.


Participants should arrive by 7:40 a.m. and be seated before 8 a.m. Seating will be on the east (visitor’s) side only. Parking will be in the McAllen High student parking lot just north of the stadium. An estimated 5,000 students have participated each of the past two years.


On Friday, Sept. 9, the Davis, Lee and Williams will visit 12 McAllen ISD campuses to engage with students at school assemblies. They will be available to speak with media from 10-10:20 a.m. at Ben Milam Elementary (3800 N. Main St.).


McAllen ISD has earned multiple national honors for its efforts to improve child health and nutrition. This includes:


* Earning a district-wide Physical Education Program Grant in 2012 – one of 56 districts in nation

* All 32 eligible schools recognized by Let’s Move! Active Schools in 2014-16

* All 32 eligible schools earning Bronze, Silver or Gold National Healthy Schools awards from The Alliance for a Healthier Generation in 2014-16 – largest district in nation to have all eligible schools earn an award.

* In 2015-16, five McAllen ISD schools, the most of any school district in Texas, earned a state PE award from Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD).


At the conclusion of Saturday’s event, McAllen ISD employees and parents are invited for a Let’s Move! Community Walk on the track. This will run approximately from 9:30 – 10 a.m.

The partners for this weekend’s events include McAllen ISD, City of McAllen, The Monitor, Texas A&M University’s Healthy South Texas, United Healthcare, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, Telemundo 40 and Rio Grande Regional Hospital.
