There’s another special season happening for the McHi Lady Bulldogs, the latest chapter with an impressive showing in San Antonio.
The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team pulled away from John Paul II to defeat the Guaradians 25-18, 25-12 on Saturday and win the championship of the San Antonio ISD Volleyball Tournament at the Convocation Center in San Antonio.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 16-1 on the season, their only loss coming in the season opener against Laredo Alexander. They played that match without senior setter Carter Helmcamp who, along with outside hitter Julia Monday, were named to the SAISD All-Tournament team.
“We are very excited about this season,” said Head Coach Paula Dodge, in her 21st season at the helm of the varsity team. “Our team is motivated and excited.”
With four seniors and a junior returning from last year’s team, the Lady Bulldogs weren’t too certain on what to expect, especially early in the season. They’ve got a much better idea now after not only the SAISD tournament title, but also winning their second straight McAllen PoundFest tournament earlier this month.
“We just need to continue to get better and faster and tigthen our offense,” said Dodge, whose team played six matches in the two-day event. “Our defense is what tstarts it all. We are improving at all aspects of game as well as getting stronger as a team, as a unit – that’s what these trips are for. “
McHi has one more tournament next weekend at Sharyland and one game – Tuesday at PSJA – before district play begins.
“Our team really shut down with some tough serving and good defensive play from both the back and the front and that helped us get our offense going,” Dodge said. “We are lucky to have a lot of different option we can go to and not just rely on one attacker.”
