McAllen Memorial’s Ebony Johnson scored 17 points and blocked eight shots to spearhead the Lady Mustangs’ 57-46 win over crosstown rival McHi Lady Bulldogs Friday night.
Johnson, on fire early, hit six field goals in the first half and guard Victoria Izaguirre scored 16 points and played tenacious defense to help secure the victory at home.
It was a big 30-6A win for Memorial as it remains undefeated in league play at 5-0, and now has won seven out its last eight games.
McHi, which trailed the entire game, did make a serious run in fourth quarter and got within six points and then was awarded four straight foul shots. The Lady Bulldogs could have gotten within two with 38 seconds left, but they only made one of the four and couldn’t get any closer.
McHi dropped its first game in the last nine and is 3-1 in district. It was led by the strong play of Sabrina Guzman, who finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Also, Brianna Coffee added 14 and Victoria Alaina had 11 and seven boards.
In addition to Johnson and Izaguirre’s play, a big advantage for Memorial was freshman Valeria Garcia. The team’s leading rebounder played with determination and scored 6 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
