Here are my Week 3 Power Rankings. Interesting week of football, as there are some new teams in the Top 5.
15.) Brownsville Veterans Memorial-The Chargers are off to a hot start in 2016. After a comeback win against Edinburg North, the Chargers took care of business against their crosstown rival, Brownsville Rivera. Gustavo Vasquez managed over 200 yards and four scores.
14.) Los Fresnos-The Falcons had a bye week after their win against E-E, Mark Mata and Co. look to pick up where they left off against McHI in week 3.
13.) Mercedes-The Tigers are off to an (0-2) start this year, the Tigers managed to put up 14 fourth quarter points, but fell shy of a comeback. The road doesn’t get any easier as Mercedes travels to Weslaco.
12.) Economedes-The train continues to roll over on the East side of Edinburg. Through two games Econ has gone over the 40 point mark and has allowed an average 11 points per game. The Jags will square off against fellow (2-0) Weslaco East Thursday night.
11.) PSJA North-PSJA North picked up where they left off, and that’s running the ball and playing a solid defense. Bo Adams yet again had himself a game.
10.) St. Joesph-The Bloodhounds are (2-0) as expected. However, a matchup vs Rio Hondo awaits. If you’re a fan of shootouts and points, I’d keep tabs on this one.
9.) Vela-The offense continues to post huge numbers, although the defense has given up a lot of points as well. Vela looks to get back on track against Brownsville Veterans in week 3.
8.) Roma-The Gladiators are set up for an early district test vs a tough and unbeaten Laredo Nixon squad. Keep in mind, 31-5A begins their district play this week.
7.) Weslaco-Weslaco got back on track this past weekend with an impressive road win at San Antonio Marshall. The Panthers will welcome in Mercedes who is looking for their first win of the season.
6.) McAllen Memorial-The Mustangs showed plenty of heart and guts against a solid Weslaco East team. Campbell Speights went for 137 yards on 23 carries, that is pretty impressive against a tough Wildcat defense. A huge road test awaits the ‘Stangs when they travel to Bobby Morrow Stadium.
5.) Mission Veterans-We knew coming in the Patriots would need to address their defense. However, the Patriots have one of the top offenses in the Valley. Vets begins their district play vs Laredo Martin.
4.) Edcouch-Elsa-The Jackets pulled out an incredible win Friday night. Some folks are calling it game of the year. Anyway, it’s a matter of time before E-E begins to click on all cylinders.
3.) Harlingen-The Redbirds committed five turnovers in their loss to Laredo United South, that is tough to overcome. Harlingen was also without the services of Leo Tienda. The Cards will travel to San Antonio to take on Reagan.
2. Weslaco East-The Wildcats gutted out another road win this past Friday night against a pretty good offense in McAllen Memorial. East does two things I love to see in a football team, run the ball and play defense.
1.) San Benito-The Greyhounds got another impressive win last week, like Weslaco East, the two teams made the jump into the Top 5. The Hounds let loose their new weapon in RB, Tyrone Harper. Harper went for 140 yards and two scores. San Benny looks to continue their hot start in Week 3, as McAllen Memorial comes to town. With the first two weeks in the books, The Hounds have claimed the top spot for the first time this season.
