Narro’s Weekly Power Rankings Week 6

By: Kevin Narro

With district play underway, we have some new teams in new spots.

15.) Sharyland-The Rattlers are riding a three game win streak. After a close loss against Weslaco East back in Week 1, Sharyland has found their form. Alan Alvarez continues to thrive. Now what impresses me is this defense has one returner from last year, through week six this defense is allowing 12 points per game.

14.) Los Fresnos-32-6A kicked off with a bang this past Friday night. The Falcons once again played tough and showed signs of what it takes to be a playoff team. Keep in mind the Falcons where up 13-0 at one point in this game. Something will have to give this Friday when both Los Fresnos and Harlingen South square off.

13.) Brownsville St.Joesph-The Bloodhounds suffered their first loss of the 2016 season. Now it was a non district game, so it’s not the end of the world for St. Joe. Take this as a minor speed bump in what will be a special season.

12.) McAllen Rowe-It was gut check time for the Warriors, and they prevailed. Rowe remains unbeaten on the year, and earned their first district win in the process. The Warriors will take their unbeaten record on the road when they take on La Grulla.

11.) Port Isabel-He’s quickly becoming known as the “Silva Bullet” Omar Silva and company completed the upset win over St. Joe. The Tarpons continue to pound the rock with an average of 391 yards per game.

10.) Edinburg Economedes-You have to love inner city rivalry games. Econ had two big pass plays for scores, other than that EHS brought their A-game. However, there is still a long way to go. I fully expect the Jags to rebound in the upcoming weeks.

9.) Weslaco-The Panthers just couldn’t get their ground game going vs East. Weslaco gets Hanna this week before they meet up with the Cardinals. Each week in a battle in 32-6A.

8.) PSJA North-The Raiders got another win, but it was a costly one. RB Bo Adams was lost due to an injury, now PSJA North will turn to the next man up.

7.) McAllen Memorial-Memorial dropped 70 points in their district opener vs Palmview. The Mustangs remain the class of 30-6A. Campbell Speights and Emilio Mendez have a combined 854 yards on the ground, and five scores.

6.) Harlingen-Look who’s back in uniform, its Leo Tienda. The Cards got all they can handle against their rival Harlingen South. Harlingen has a daunting schedule ahead of them, but getting Leo back and that first district win was huge. Now the train can begin to roll.

5.) Vela- I hadn’t seen Vela play since last seasons playoff game against Victoria East. I got to see this team Friday night first hand. Despite the slow start in the first half, the offense did not disappoint. Robert Guerra chugged for 285 yards and four touchdowns.

4.) Mission Veterans-The Pats picked up another district win, and now will have a biggie this week vs Pioneer. If you like points scored I’d keep my twitter fingers ready.

3.) Weslaco East-The Wildcats defense was on full display vs Weslaco. East dominated from the word go, only allowing 64 yards rushing. Every win is huge in 32-6A, and East took one step forward with their first district win.

2.) Edcouch-Elsa-After a week of district play, the Jackets remain the front runner in 32-5A. E-E gets rival Donna this week, then comes the huge two week stretch vs Brownsville Veterans and Mercedes.

1.) San Benito-The Hounds overcame three deflects vs the Falcons. San Benny gutted out a hard fought win on the road. Tyrone Harper rushed for 121 yards in the win. San Benito gets Weslaco East on Friday night, yet another blockbuster matchup in 32-6A.

Teams to keep an eye on:Sharyland Pioneer, Harlingen South,Brownsville Veterans, La Feria, Brownsville Lopez.
