Narro’s Weekly Power Rankings Week 8

By: Kevin Narro

The Top 15 has been shaken up, some teams are out, some are in. We are entering the back end of the 2016 season.

15.)Rio Hondo-The theme for my weekend was defense, the Bobcats defense made a few big stands at the goal line versus Port Isabel. Tyler Bush and Danny Vasquez make a dynamic duo on offense. A vast majority of this squad are underclassmen, scary.

14.) Mercedes-After going winless in their non district portion of the schedule, the Tigers are now (3-0) in district. This week Mercedes takes on E-E, in a game where the Tigers can put themselves in a prime position for the 32-5A crown.

13.) Weslaco East-A back door slider was thrown into 32-6A this week. East will meet Harlingen this Friday night in what will be a battle of heavy weights.

12.) Brownsville St. Joseph-The Bloodhounds picked up a 50-0 win along with holding on to the Holy Bowl Trophy. St. Joe gets the Marine Military Academy before they begin a three week stretch vs San Antonio opponents.

11.) Mission Veterans-After a quick (3-0) start, Vets has now dropped their last two games. The bye week will serve good, as the Patriots will saddle up for the stretch run.

10.) Sharyland Pioneer-After a slow start against Rio Grande City, the offense found its form behind QB Jacob Rosales. The Snakeskin classic is this Friday night as both teams are chasing Nixon for the district lead. On another note, the D’Backs defense has been playing some of its best ball in the last few weeks.

9.) Edinburg Economedes-After going in tied at 14 all into halftime against a savvy PSJA offense, Econ turned up, and outscored the Bears, 21-0 thus winning 35-14. Econ will now take on Edinburg North, in a game that will have playoff implications.

8.) Sharyland-The Rattlers yet again posted big offensive numbers, and again the defense stifled Cigarroa. Week 8 begins the test starting with rival Sharyland Pioneer.

7.) Weslaco-Weslaco played hard and tough at Harlingen this past Friday night. With four teams with two losses the Panthers are in the thick of a playoff berth.

6.) Edcouch-Elsa- E-E can right the wrong this week by getting a win against Mercedes, the offense is too good to count out. The Jackets haven proven over time they answer the bell when facing adversity.

5.) PSJA North-This PSJA North defense has yet to allow double digit points all season. The hits just keep coming and they force turnovers. We are a week away from Vela vs PSJA North. For now, the Raiders focus will be on PSJA Southwest.

4.) McAllen Memorial-The stampede continues to pound opposing defenses in 30-6A. A big test awaits this Friday night, as La Joya’s stout defense welcomes in the Mustangs.

3.) Vela-The SaberCats offense continues to thrive, again like I said we are a week away from Vela vs PSJA North in what could be for the 31-6A district title.

2.) Harlingen-The Cardinals defense was the key in their Week 7 win. Now we can see all three phases beginning to bear fruit. Yet another big time matchup awaits, with Weslaco East awaiting the Red Birds.

1.) San Benito-From the opening kickoff, (literally) the War Dogs came out swinging. If you’re a fan of points and offense, Harlingen South vs San Benito should fill your offensive needs. The Hounds remain a top the rankings for yet another week.

Teams to keep an eye on: Port Isabel,Harlingen South,McAllen Rowe, Brownsville Lopez
