Redskins Addressing Skill Positions in Pre-Season

(DONNA) – Coming into last season’s start of the football season, Donna High head coach Ramiro Leal was using the preseason to try and figure out where he was going to put all of his playmakers.

After all, the Redskins had two capable quarterbacks, three guys who could handle the load at the running back position and had some quality receivers as well.

Not to mention he had an excellent offensive line to block for his offensive weapons.

Now entering the 2016 preseason, Leal finds himself looking at who is going to fill all of those roles due to the fact he lost a lot of players on the offensive side of the ball due to graduation.

“Last year we were loaded with talent on offense and the biggest issue we had was trying to figure out where to put them,” said Leal. “We had Amonte Bowen, Paul Guerra and Edward Dougherty who were our premiere playmakers and also had an excellent offensive line and a receiving corps that was very solid. We knew on offense we were going to be very dangerous.”

“Now, we have to pretty much fill all of those roles due to the fact we only have two players returning on offense from last year. We are completely rebuilding our offense and are looking for players that can step it up and make us competitive on that side of the ball.”

And while the task is a big one, Leal feels that the incoming group of Redskins will carry over the tradition that has been around Donna High for a long time now.

Not to mention the fact that the Redskins are the defending 32-5A champions and come into the new season destined to remain contenders in the district.

“Even though this may be considered a rebuilding year for us, we don’t look at it that way,” said Leal. “Here at Donna High, there is so much tradition in any sport and people want that tradition to continue year in and year out.”

“And even though we are going to be very young on both sides of the ball, I feel we have some key kids coming back that will lead the team. Also, we have some young kids that I feel will come in and do a good job for us. We know that it’s not going to be an easy task with the fact that we are basically starting over. But we are going to go out there and play Redskins football each and every night and our goal is to continue to grow and get better as the season progresses.”
