The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in an 11-1 loss to Rio Grande City on Friday. The Rattlers scored on a walk by Saul Garcia and a fielder’s choice by Jeremy Gorena in the first inning.
Rio Grande City took an early lead in the first inning. Saul Garcia drove in a run when he walked with the bases loaded.
The Rattlers scored five runs in the sixth inning. RGC’s big inning was driven by a single by Nando Sepulveda, a single by Garcia, a fielder’s choice by Jeremy Gorena, and a single by Jason Perez.
Sepulveda earned the win for Rio Grande City. He threw five innings, surrendering one run, one hit, and striking out five. Justin Anaya took the loss for Chargers. He went five and a third innings, surrendering 11 runs, 11 hits, and striking out two.
Jorge Rodriguez led Chargers with one run batted in. He went 0-for-2 on the day.
Rio Grande City had 11 hits in the game. Jose Gazca, Javi Gozalez, and Perez each collected multiple hits for Rio Grande City. Gorena went 1-for-4 at the plate as he led the team with three runs batted in. Rio Grande City was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error.
Noe Aguirre had the most chances in the field with six.
