(MCALLEN) – After having a ton of success while putting on football camps and speed camps in the Rio Grande Valley, South Texas Select Showcase coordinator B.J. Garcia knew he needed to return to the area in some way, shape or form.
“We have had four camps in the Rio Grande Valley over the past two years and each and every one of them has been a complete success,” said Garcia. “So when we started planning for this year’s speed camp, we decided to open it up to the public and let them decide where to have it.” “Wouldn’t you know, the Rio Grande Valley was the area that overwhelmingly hit us up with messages to put on the speed camp and in the end, our decision was easy to make.”
Sure enough, Garcia is coming back as he and former Texas Longhorns running back D.J. Monroe will be putting on a speed camp which will take place in McAllen and on South Padre Island on Saturday, July 30th.
The camp in McAllen will take place at Cavazos Sports Institute starting at 1 p.m. with registration taking place 30 minutes prior to the start.
As for the Island, Garcia is still ironing out the details and should have everything settled be the end of the day on Thursday or Friday. But is looking to start things about 6:30 p.m.
“We hosted the camp at Weslaco and Edcouch-Elsa in the two years we have been here and felt it needed to be spread out across the Rio Grande Valley,” said Garcia. “So we decided to bring it to McAllen and to South Padre Island.”
“Having it in McAllen allows the kids from Starr County and from Hidalgo County to come out while the kids from Cameron County and Willacy County can head to the Island.”
“As for the kids from the Mid-Valley, they can choose which one to go to.”
Garcia said the speed camp is open to both boys and girls of all ages and involve all sports.
“The good thing about the speed camp is the fact that is benefits all sports,” said Garcia. “We work on a ton of speed and agility drills that DJ and I actually use in our private training which will help these youngsters become a better athlete.”
