I was watching David Epstein’s The Sports Gene tonight and I started to think about whether or not in was possible to really be good at a sport if you lack the body for that sport.
Many people think that it’s about heart, and while I think that plays a role, most coaches will tell you that its not about X’s and O’s, but rather Jimmy’s and Joe’s.
Epstein talks about all the revolutionary advances in apparel and equipment and how athletes of the past would have been up to par with some of our current stars.
He also points out the changes in the body types of the NBA over time, but I think something that really blew my mind was how different body types were defined on where you grew up. Maybe we should look this as a reality check that your kid not matter how much you spend on them, or how much they practice are limited on their potential.
