Even though Weslaco and PSJA both had their opportunities, it was PSJA that eventually prevailed 7-3 on Friday. The game was tied at three with the Bears batting in the top of the fifth when Marc Castillo homered off of Jon Castillo, driving in two runs.
PSJA captured the lead in the second inning. Cheke Marroquin hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring one run.
After PSJA scored one run in the top of the third, the Panthers answered with one of their own. PSJA scored when Jon Castillo uncorked a wild pitch, scoring one run. Weslaco then answered when there was an error, scoring one run.
The Bears evened things up at three in the top of the fourth inning. With one out in the fourth inning Frank Cantu drove in one run when he tripled.
Marc Castillo earned the win for PSJA. He went seven innings, allowing three runs, six hits, and striking out ten. Castillo took the loss for Weslaco. He pitched four and two-thirds innings, surrendering five runs, 11 hits, striking out five, and walking zero.
Rico Avila went 1-for-3 at the plate as he led the team with two runs batted in.
The Bears collected 16 hits. Castillo, Trey Guajardo, Marroquin, Cantu, Juan Zambrano, and Devon Deleon each collected multiple hits for the Bears. Castillo went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bears in hits.
