Weslaco tops 956sports.com’s new Top 10 poll

The Weslaco Panthers, via their decisive victory over powerful Los Frensos, are 956sports.com‘s new No. 1 boys team in our Top 10 poll.

The Weslaco boys went to Los Fresnos last Friday and picked up a cool and complete victory over the Falcons. Los Fresnos, a team to be reckoned with, is still in great position to make the playoffs and will make some noise before its over.

However, the week belonged to the Panthers who have played solid all season long minus a game or two early in the season. They have depth, can play inside and out and have earned the spot.

No. 2 Vela, did nothing wrong but drops from the top perch as it keeps trucking along. Most people are looking forward to the weekend when Vela hosts No. 4 Edinburg High. Will be one of the biggest games of the season and may allow it to reclaim No. 1.

Also on the boys’ poll, Edinburg moves to No. 4 with its convincing win over a solid PSJA North team, Los Fresnos and Santa Rosa drop and Mercedes makes its first appearance (Economedes drops out).

On the girls side, Edinburg and Weslaco solidified the two top spots with huge district victories over ranked teams. Both teams played very well in their wins and are in the driver’s seat for playoff appearances.

Meanwhile, Brownsville Vets, McAllen Memorial and McHi all moved up with wins of their own. The Harlingen team, both on hot streaks, also moved up the poll. San Benito and PSJA North, while still top 10 teams, moved down the poll via their losses. PSJA Memorial rounds out the list – it won twice last week. San Benito drops out.
