The Mission Veterans program has quickly progress into one of the best in all of Region 4.  Returning is UTRGV commit Noel Vela who hit .538 with 43 RBI and was 5-3 on the mound with an ERA of 0.71 last season after hitting .431 with 33RBI and 1 HR and 11-1 with an ERA of 1.6 with 141 K’s during his junior season.  “This year’s version of the Patriots brings back an experienced group and hopes to build on another successful campaign,” said Coach Smith.  “A tough tournament schedule should help prepare us for the grind of a very tough 31-5A district in which every team is a legitimate playoff contender.  We must continue to pitch, play good defense, and be fundamentally sound to ensure a productive season,” added Coach Smith.  Eddie Galvan had a great 2016 season hitting .400 with a whopping 48 RBI with 3 HR and he also went 5-1 on the mound with a 3.05 ERA.  The other five returning starters are Roman De Leon (.357 with 14 RBI and 1 HR), Alex De Leon (.380 with 30 RBI 2 HR and 2-0 on the mound with an ERA of 3.97), William Pena (.321 with 1 HR and 31 RBI), A.J. Rangel (.319 16 RBI), and Cristian Ramos (.291 with 11 RBI and 10-1 with an ERA of .98 last season) who makes a very solid 1-2 punch for the Patriots on the mound. The Patriots have been in the playoffs 6 of the last 8 seasons. Going back to 2009 (6th Place) 7-15; 2010 (4th Place) 14-14; 2011 (4th Place) 17-7; 2012 (5th Place) 15-9; 2013 (1st Place) 27-6; 2014 23-6 (Co-Champs with Roma); 2015 (1st Place) 27-10 (co-champs with Sharyland) and last season 27-4-1 (1st Place).  Veterans will battle sister school Sharyland, Valley View, and Roma for the district title in 2017.
